Quick glance - as a restaurant:
+ locally sourced produce, including seafood, lamb, and beef
+ good value for money
+ attentive staff
- small restaurant - reservation necessary especially in the summer season
- limited choices for vegetarians
My boyfriend and I went to the restaurant just after August bank holiday, so the drove of tourists have mostly returned home and we were lucky to be seated for dinner right by the big window with a view to the harbour and the estuary. The next couple who walked through the doors were turned away as the restaurant were unable to accomdate further guests, even though the restaurant looked half empty at 8:30pm.
As it turned out, the restaurant was very popular and by 9pm was completely packed. The ingredients are locally sourced where possible and the restaurant offers a range of seafood and meat for starter and main, as well as a selection of English dessert and Welsh cheeses.
The food were beautifully presented and tasted fresh and delicious, although some of the combination of flavours were more experimental and, in a funny sort of way, showed its immaturity. For example, the sauce was pleasant but didn't quite go with the lamb dish, or maybe it was the sides (colcannon potatoes) that clashed with the sauce.
My boyfriend correctly guessed that the restaurant is quite young, and the waitress confirmed the establishment opened only in May 2010. The food looks and tasted the part, but was not quite the complete package, but in no way detracts from the flavour. The waitresses were too eager to help and we were repeatedly asked if everything was ok (too attentive). When we ordered the Welsh cheeses for dessert, the younger waitress had no idea what the cheeses were and named a few well-known cheese variety that were not of Welsh origin.
The latter is more of a problem with training and experience, but the food itself was very good, especially given the sparse choices in the Aberdovey area.
If you are after a tasty meal while on holiday in Aberdyfi or in the nearby area, I would recommend this restaurant, as I imagine its quality will continue to improve. Reservations are highly recommended - also as.k for a window seat if you are reserving a table for two.
