A wonderful find - find being the operative word, Aberdovey is not easy to get to... let the train take the strain? However, the Penhelig Arms alone is worth the trip. Wonderful dinner, lots of local fresh ingredients, especially fish (although the Black Forest slate couldn't be described as local, you'd have to try it!). Don't be misled by the 'Bin Ends', attractively priced at £18, they appear to have gone. Rooms have been recently re-furbished and are delighful. Staff very helpful. If you also happen to be a golfer, top your trip off with a round at Aberdovey, you then have already had a very memorable visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a river/sea view - Room 3 superb

A really nice surprise, with fantastic rooms (we were in the Bodhelig suite). I'd hesitated about paying the extra, but was very glad we did – plenty of room for us and large labrador and fantastic views from the terrace plus a superb bathroom. The private parking next to the rooms is a bonus in Aberdovey. We didn't eat there in the evening but did have a nightcap in the bar and a very pleasant breakfast the next morning.

Room Tip: Can't speak for the other rooms, but would recommend Bodelig suite.

I am very disappointed that my review of the meal I had at this hotel in August, has been removed.

Briefly, although it was of good quality, the portions were very very small and totally inadequate. As a result the price charged can only be described as extortionate.

To avoid confusion, the comments below refer to the main hotel. There are some newer cottages in the grounds to the rear, which appeared somewhat more up-market than the main hotel itself, but I can't comment about these as we had a room in the main building.
We found all of the public areas quite run-down and very much in need of refurbishment, and the hotel bar was so un-inviting we couldn't bring ourselves to eat there.
In the restaurant we had the worst meal we have ever had (see separate review in the restaurant section). It was so bad we had to complain, but to be fair the cost was taken off our bill, although the evening was completely spoilt.
The parking is quite difficult with the car-park only having 6 or 7 spaces for the whole hotel, and all the surrounding streets being controlled between 8 or 9 am and 6pm. Watching for a space and then going and moving your car seemed to be the norm.
Our room was adequate, although the bathroom could have done with a re-furb, and the shower was cold or very occasionally luke-warm.
Topping up the room supplies e.g. bottled water didn't seem to happen.
Breakfasts were quite disorganised, and would have been a complete shambles if it hadn't been for one fantastic waitress who seemed to cope with a dozen or more tables on her own. She was brilliant, and very friendly too. Unfortunately the rest of the hotel didn't match her standard.
We would choose somewhere else next time.

Room Tip: Get a sea view room, the rear of the main building is dire.

My elderley parents booked two weeks in the apartments which they do each year as everything is on one level as steps are a problem due to mobility issues. After 2 days they woke to find they had no hot water and for the rest of the holiday they were unable to use their own shower. Despite trying to fix the problem the staff were unable to mend the defective boiler so made arangements for my parents to use a shower in the main hotel but this involved steep stairs so it was not convenient. I did try and speak to the manager on several occasions but he was never available. That said, a young lady called Emma who was deputy manager did everything she could to assist my parents and i must put on record her sterling efforts and the fact she was so supportive and was able to provide my parents with a reduced bill that compensated them for their inconvenience. Emma is a credit to the establishment and i hope the brewery realise that without her efforts this review would have been considerably different.

Room Tip: Apartments have great views

We stayed here as my boyfriend was Racing the Train in nearby Tywyn. It's in a terrific location in Aberdovey, seconds away from the water front and shops; and if you're driving in easy drive of a number of other places.

When we got there we were immediately greeted and given our room key and up we went (I'm sure they would help with cases if you asked but we didn't need it). We had room 6 with a lovely sea view. The room itself was quite small but fully equipped with a tv, tea and coffee making facilities etc. The shower room was fine - fairly compact - has a hair dryer. I quite liked the chair that was facing the window - you really did want to just sit in it and watch the world go by!

Breakfast was good - well it was for my boyfriend - there was a bit of miscommunication between me and the waitress so my scrambled egg was microwaved in the end whereas his was lovely and buttery - but that aside it was really good.

We also ate there in the evening and I had one of the best bits of halibut I'd ever had - really meaty. It's a nice little restaurant with some good choices of wine.

There is an outdoor area up at the top of the hotel where you can sit and have a few drinks and really take in the gorgeous views.

Service was good too.

Room Tip: Try and get one with a sea view

Arriving at the hotel we had trouble locating a member of staff to book us in. Eventually we found someone who directed us to our room. We were allocated Room 15 in the suite of rooms situated above the main hotel with beautiful views of the estuary. The room was excellent. It was large with an equally large bathroom. Although the railway line was behind us we did not hear anything to disturb our sleep during the night. We had our own patio to sit out in and we were pleased with the standard of the room. The meal in the evening was good although portions were rather large and this continued at breakfast when I ordered scrambled eggs and was served with a portion that would have satisfied three people! Staff were attentive and helpful. We would certainly recommend it to anyone considering staying in Aberdovey. They also love dogs!

Room Tip: Choose a suite. Room 15 is good although you can hear people moving about above you but this is not...
