We went to the Jamaica Inn on the recommendation of a friend and as it was my wifes birthday we decided to try it out. We sat outside for a drink before our meal and to look at the menu. As they did not seem busy we took our time, and my wife settled on a Peking Duck. It said on the menu , pink in capitals therefore we expected that as they made a point of pointing this out that it would come pink. So after about 30mins of waiting (which was not unreasonable), we got our meal. My meal was fine, good pub fare but my wife was presented with an overdone duck sat swimming in a greasy pool of fat which we were informed was gravy ??? Peking Duck with gravy ???? We were told that the grease was coming from the chilli butter that accompanied the dish and that was it. Eventually they took it back and my wife asked that the sauce ?! come separately so as not to cause the greasiness. It arrived after a 20min wait with the same said grease on the side. The only way i can describe it is the remnants in the bottom of a roasting tin after roasting a chicken, it was thin, covered in oil and disgusting. When i tried to complain to the manager she was not interested and said that it was made with a roux and that was how it was supposed to be. I then went straight up to get the bill and lo and behold they charged me £15 for the duck !!! Considering i had not much luck with the manager i just paid for all the drinks and my meal even left £3 extra and gave her the bill and said i would not be paying for the duck. She then followed me out of the restaurant and demanded that i pay for the duck as my wife had ate it. I refused and she said that if i did not give her my name and my number that she would be reporting me for not paying the bill !! Im sure there are other people who have had great meals here, but i for one will not be returning.

I was extremely frustrated to read this article. We had already been informed of the incident by the staff working on the evening this occurred and indeed had tried to contact the 'reviewer' on numerous occasions to discuss exactly what happened. Our telephone calls remain unanswered.

Suffice to say at The Jamaica Inn we pride ourselves on a high standard of food, served in a professional, friendly manner in a relaxed environment. We are not a restaurant per se - as we work within the restrictions of the building - but nor are we a pub. We have worked hard to establish a good business and feel our customers are generally very appreciative of what we are and what we do.

We are exceptionally busy at this time of year and our staff - both in the kitchen and front of house - are working under a lot of pressure. It is not appropriate to compare us with other establishments who are serving a quarter of the customers we serve on a daily basis in peak season.

I would like to point out that the duck itself (Peking) is a breed which is slightly more fatty than other breeds, giving it more flavour but often making it slightly more greasy. For this, and the fact that the first duck was overdone, we can only apologise. I am sure the member of staff who dealt with the complaint did the same.

The first (half-eaten) duck was replaced with a new portion which was eaten in full. This would explain why the manager on duty charged for the meal. Had both portions been sent back uneaten no attempt would have been made to charge for the meal. If I were as unhappy with a meal in a restaurant I simply would not eat it.

I am disappointed that the reviewer had such a negative experience of The Jamaica Inn and that he felt the need to deal with it in this manner, whilst avoiding our telephone calls in the meantime. I should also add that the manager on duty and a number of our customers found the reviewer to be extremely aggressive in his approach.

Food was just ok, price high,
Went late afternoon 3 of us, i had the Steak Sandwich dont know how they thought i would eat it?? Steak was small and thick with the Ciabatta bread not like i imagined it would arrive. Had to take off too much Rocket!! My Sister had Salmon for the price very small, we had been in a restaurant in the centre of Belfast day before and the Salmon here came on top of a crab cake and was also bigger for the same price??
Would call in for a drink but dont think would be eating here again, maybe i am too fussy??
