I visited the Coq & Bull 'brassiere' for a valentines dinner on 13 Feb 2014 after reading a very favourable article in the local North Down Spectator (following the recent 0.5 Million re-furb). On first impressions entering the building I thought - Wow! this really is lovely. The décor and setting and layout of the restaurant is really excellent and stylish. The menu was quite good too with a nice selection of dishes. For starters I ordered the squid (which was also recommended by the attentive staff) and my girlfriend ordered scallops (which were quite pricey at £9 odd - but you expect that for scallops). When the starters came, albeit on lovely slate type plates they looked great and well presented however, there were 3 small scallops!! the squid wasn't much better with what looked like 3 squid rings cut in half (to look bigger) and the rest of the plate was buffed up with lettuce and garnish etc. Taste was fine but the quantity really was VERY miserable (especially for that price). For a main I ordered 'fish, triple cooked chips & mushy peas' My girlfriend ordered chump steak. As in most of these new restaurants, all the extras such as veg and sauces etc must be ordered separate (bumping the cost up considerably) and although it tasted ok, after finishing our course we both were very disappointed with the helpings and were still hungry. Another point was the so called 'triple cooked chips', they were actually potato wedges - considerably different from what was on the menu. They did taste ok but not what I perceive as triple cooked chips. All in all, a lovely setting, lovely décor, the waiting staff were excellent but for the price the portion sizes are absolutely dreadful.
