“Fine establishment, beautiful town”
Reviewed 13 April 2009

Shelleven is a fine big B&B in a good location a short walk from Bangor seafront. Great home-style breakfast like you'd have at your Auntie's. My room was a good size. I wasn't bothered about whether there was a view or not, as I was only there to sleep! Service was fine, and the landlord seemed to be quite a cheery chappie even early in the morning. My only complaint was that the room was too hot for my liking as I hate sleeping in a hot room, but that was easily remedied by just turning down both radiators which were practically hopping off the wall! The bathroom was spotless, even if the shower was a bit weak for my decadent tastes. Bangor is a very pretty town. If you get a chance, take a walk along the path by the seafront. It just seems to go on forever -- don't forget that you'll need to turn back so don't walk too far!

We recently had the pleasure of spending 2 nights in the Shelleven in Bangor, Co Down when we attended a family event in Belfast. The Shelleven is a beautiful house within a few minutes walk from Bangor's beautiful sea front. The owners, Mary and Phillip Weston, could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Our bedroom was very clean, cozy and comfortable. The owners had set up a cot for our one year old son in advance and had a high chair for the dining room. They made us feel very relaxed during our stay, which is not always the case when travelling with a small child. The breakfast was out of this world! And Phillip was extremely attentive and helpful while serving breakfast. Overall, I would highly recommend a stay at the Shelleven - a real home from home.

We arrived New Years Eve Morning to a grumpy man who was being funny with us before we had even got to our rooms, The room was so cold I went and asked the manager if he would turn the heating on!!!! not that he did we spent two night there and woke through the night shivering.
Our room was nice and clean with a new bathroom and yes the breakfast was fine even if it was a bit dry (no beans or toms) we only went down on the first morning as we cudnt face another morning with grumps!!!!
Bangor is a fab place but would advise anyone under 50 not to stay there. The marine court or the salty dog or even the royal are all on the same street and defo beat the Shelleven. The food in Bangor is outstanding. Alcohol is a bit pricey but worth it. Will defo return to Bangor. Sad to be back home.

Upon arrival we were greeted with a cold reception both from the owner and the actual central heating system. Expected hotel to be warm given the fact that it was the middle of winter but it was probably warmer outside.

Rooms:

We had booked a double room via telephone only to arrive to a twin room. We were told that they could do something about it the following day(assuming push the beds together). We noticed that other rooms had a bath plus shower whereas we were confined to just a shower - which wouldnt be a problem - If it actually stayed at the same temperature for more than 10 seconds. We woke up during the night and were shivering with cold, there were no radiators on in our room at all.

The biggest problem encountered was trying to get on with the owners. It was new years eve during our stay and we arrived back to our hotel at 2am (not an unreasonable time given that it was new year). It was like a 13 year old arriving back at their house and having a row of their father!! We were told that the the hotel was closed, and were not even allowed to have a cigarette outside.

After one night me and my partner decided enough was enough and after yet another run in with the owner, about leaving the front door open for literally 30 seconds we left to go to another hotel.

The other two couples in the party stayed the second night and upon departure, the owners tried to charge an extra £10 per couple as they tried to make out that they were icorrectly quoted over the phone...needless to say they DIDNT pay it! They were also informed that the heating in our room was off the previous night but tried to blam us for turning the heating off ourselves!!!

If you are thinking of staying in Bangor, our advice would be to stay in the Salty Dog. Its a five min walk from everything with fabulous views, great hospitality, lovely bar, warm rooms and at a better price than the Shelleven!!!

STAY AT THE SHELLEVEN AT YOUR OWN RISK...DONT SAY YOU HAVENT BEEN WARNED!

We are a family of 4 from S Africa. Our family room was beautifully arranged with enough space to move around the room (considering there was 1 double bed and 2 single beds). The bathroom was beautifully decorated and a good size. The breakfast was outstanding. Eveything was clean, fresh and white bath towels were a decent size. Thank you to Phillip and Mary - wonderful hosts !

We were put in a small room, with no lovely view. They don't show that room on their website! The heating was off on arrival and seemed to be off most of the time we were there, not very homely! And it was COLD!
And the shower room, (clean enough) had the downside of half empty shampoo/shower bottles and the soap was put back in its packet having been used by the previous room occupants. Perhaps environmentally friendly? Or not?
We had the owners' lecture on keys and how it was important to shut the door behind us. In fact we went out to our car to collect something to bring back in and immediately had the door shut on us, so were locked out and had to ring the doorbell to be let back in!
To end on a positive note - Breakfast was tasty!

My partner and I and also my sister stayed at Shelleven House for two nights in February. The guesthouse house was in a fantastic location, just minutes from the marina with great views from the front rooms.

The place was spotless and comfortably furnished with a lovely dining room for breakfast and welcoming lounge area. Philip and Mary who run it are also very friendly and eager to please.

My partner and I had a HUGE double room with fabulous views. We didn't know what to do with all the space! The bed was so comfortable and I slept really well considering I am just about to give birth! My sister's single room was also lovely.

When I go back to Bangor I will definitely be staying at Shelleven again. It is great value for money too!

Nearly forgot to mention the yummy breakfast you get each morning. One day I had full Ulser breakfast and the other day I had the pancakes - both divine! Thanks :-)
