“Disappointed with quality & presentation of food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014 via mobile

Called in on impulse on evening of Thursday 7th August 2014. No problem getting a table. Very pleasant surroundings and ambience, well spaced tables. Background music at a sensible volume although maybe not always appropriate for the general, more mature clientele (drum & bass)! The serving staff were pleasant, attentive, efficient and could not be faulted.

The squid starter was very good. We ordered 2 crab creme brûlée starters, one had the expected crispy topping although it was slightly burnt. The crab itself was rather bland and was not complemented at all by the melba toast. The second crab starter was a big disappointment as the topping was very burnt and not crispy at all, allowing the crab filling to become tainted, tasting both burnt and bitter.

The potted duck starter with Yorkshire pud also was a big disappointment. Firstly, the Kilner jar containing the duck was dropped on the floor by the waiter just before he reached the table. This was not his fault as the "trendy" presentation with the jar lid open renders it inherently unstable. The dish was quickly replaced (hopefully) using a fresh jar. Secondly, the duck in the jar was served far too cold and was very difficult to extricate. Thirdly, the Yorkshire pud was served cold and proved to be virtually inedible - no mention of this appeared on the menu. Fourthly, the dish was served on a "trendy" wooden board, which in itself is not a problem. But when the wood is not close - grained and food residue from who knows how long ago could be scooped out with a knife it does raise a serious question about food hygiene and safety!

The organic beef burger main course was excellent.

For pudding, a tiramisu was ordered. This was served almost frozen, therefore difficult to manipulate with a spoon or fork and reducing the level of flavour of the dish.

2 coffees were also ordered, a latte and a cappuccino. Both were served lukewarm with insufficient heat to dissolve sugar, although the flavour was perfectly acceptable.

Our disappointment was conveyed initially to a waitress who passed our comments on and we were approached by the manager who listened attentively as we reiterated them. She undertook to pass them on to the head chef. As regards the inedible (to all 3 of us) Yorkshire pud, she stated "that's how we serve it", which is fair enough but not apparent from the menu. It may be considered modern, original and "trendy" but we found it to be unappetising, unoriginal and uneatable.

The disappointment with the tiramisu and the coffees occurred after the discussion with the manager and were related to a server.

Overall, the experience was rather disappointing. The 6 food dishes and 2 drinks ranged from excellent (2) to mediocre (4) to very poor (2). It would be difficult to give an overall score of more than 4/10 and would require careful consideration before a return visit. Whilst the brasserie itself is very pleasant and the serving staff were very good, the inconsistent quality of the food makes it difficult to recommend Coq & Bull to friends, family and acquaintances, certainly not without reservations.

“Good ambience and service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

The Coq and Bull is an attractive place in the Clandeboye Lodge complex and we enjoyed a fine family meal. Two of us had the Tortellini, which were very good in taste, even if the presentarion was a bit ordinary. The others had meat or poultry dishes which were well cooked. Empty plates all round. Not the cheapest, obviously, but worth it to relax in that lovely dining room and enjoy the extremely pleasant ambience.

“Good food let down by bad service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014 via mobile

I have visited this restaurant on a number of occasions. The restaurant has been well decorated and is modern & inviting.

The menu highlights the best of local ingredients which is great and the food itself has always been good in my opinion.

However, what lets this restaurant down is the level of service. On my first visit the service was mediocre at best but I thought that this may have been teething problems and I was happy to go back again to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Subsequent visits weren't much better and on the last occasion I went for an early lunch on a bank holiday and there was our table and one other table occupied. There appeared to be plenty of staff but food service was slow and to try and get anyone's attention when we wanted something was nearly impossible. I ended up having to get up and go to go and look for someone to serve us. The staff that day just seemed to have no enthusiasm or drive and were content to stand around chatting to each other, not paying attention to guests.

I haven't been back since due to the service or lack of it.

“Wonderful Evening!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2014

Went to Coq & Bull for a family birthday on Sunday 27th July. One family member is coeliac and another has severe food allergies. Rang first to enquire about menu and staff were very helpful suggesting suitable dishes.
We had a wonderful evening. It was lovely just to relax and know that all our dietary requirements were being looked after. Food was excellent and staff very attentive.
Relaxed informal atmosphere - modern decor.
Would definitely recommend to anyone with food allergies or who is coeliac.
Will have to go back and try the burger it looked great and my vanilla ice cream was to die for!
