This is a really lovely place to go for an afternoon out. A very sweet tea room, and a little museum on the Silk Industry in Macclesfield. The staff are all really nice, and there is a cinema upstairs. The building is beautiful and kept in very good condition. Upstairs in the Cinema, all the original features are still in place, although it isn't the comfyest cinema, it is perfectly enjoyable and quite reasonably priced.

We took the Guided Tour at noon of factory (Paradise Mill ) with Mike, which took just over 1 hour (3 tours a day from April)
The story of life in the mill with working demonstrations. We were the only two on the tour with Mike who took us through the Mill, explaining how Silk manufacturing came to Macclesfield. Only the top floor remains. It is located on the 3rd floor, access by  lift or stairs All original and untouched since they closed in 1981. It looks like all the workers have just finished work and gone home! A great education for both young and old.

The Museum & small cafe is a one minute walk from Paradise Mill.
You can watch a 16 minute DVD presentation, story of Silk in Macclesfield.
There are hands on block printing and  tasks to complete etc etc, good for children of all ages. The museum has so much information that you can quite easily spend a few hours there or  you could walk through it glancing at the displays in 10 minutes.

The staff and volunteers that work from the Silk Museum were both knowledgable and passionate about sharing the history of the Silk industry with us and enjoyed answering questions. We spent 3 hours visiting both buildings and could have stayed longer except for our car park ticket expiring.
A  Marvelous Attraction. There is also the Herritage Centre, currently being refurbished , but open and free of charge for the time being.

I was very curious as to why Macclesfield had a connection with silk and I've just spent a delightful day discovering the answer. I'm not going to tell you the answer, you need to go yourself.
The tour of Paradise Mill was brilliant and answered all my questions, the tour guide was excellent, much better than just reading information boards. The museum then had lots of items on display, a beautiful silk rug from Kashmir was the highlight for me. Lots of hands on for children to do too. A really well thought out, interesting museum for all ages. Then to top it all it's so near the Derbyshire High Peak if you avoid the motor ways it's a magical journey too.

Stepping into Paradise Mill feels very special. Its the kind of place which could so easily be ruined by overly enthusiastic renovation or large crowds and I hope that it manages to survive unspoilt.

I think it is a great shame that you can no longer take photographs and this diminishes the experience. I also can't help but think this is a strange policy - don't photographs = publicity = visitors?
