“Great little bar”
Reviewed 11 August 2014 via mobile

Have been going since it opened, on and off. Been to the quizzes on Sundays which are good fun. Started going at lunchtime for a cuppa and occasional sandwich - its always quiet which is nice when you have a busy day. Recently went on saturday night. Busy with usual great atmos. Always worth a visit.

“Superb pub lunch”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

I took eight American undergraduates here for lunch after a tour of the Macclesfield Silk Museum. The staff had in fact recommended the Treacle Tap. The pub lunch was really wonderful and enjoyed by all. I had the cheese and onion pie, a real ale and a sticky toffee pudding. The quality was excellent. All the students enjoyed their meals too and have been very keen on sticky toffee pudding ever since. I strongly recommend this pub to all.

“Why is it so quiet”
Reviewed 23 July 2014 via mobile

Called in at lunchtime. Nice, healthy selection on menu. Tried the platter.

Good food, nice atmosphere and an edge (local produce, unusual beer). So where are all the people?

Thanks very much for the kind review. If you came in the middle of the heatwave, well, we were a bit quiet as people headed to the cafes and pubs with beer gardens. We are usually busiest when the temperatures drop outside - we are frequently referred to as 'cosy'!

Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

Visited quite often in march and April 2014 almost 2-3 times a week with friends. Nice and cozy place with awesome staff. Wasabi peanuts and vedett beer is a must try here. They have large variety of beer...

“Laid back, well-kept ale and good bottle range”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

Virtually as soon as The Treacle Tap opened, it was picking up a pub-of-the-season award. Quite rightly. Not only did The Tap lead the way in helping to banish it's Sunderland Street's location former grimy reputation, but also helped pave the way for similar, real-ale orientated bars and pubs. To the point where there's now very few places in the town centre where you can't get real ale. Five years ago, the opposite was true.

It's not a huge place and thusly, can fill up quickly, especially Friday night and the like. As such, there's room for three handpumps only, but the ale is always well-kept and of good variety for the size of the bar to not be an issue. Flensburger and Vedett adorn the lager fonts and a very good range of bottles in the well-stocked fridge behind the bar.

Despite the length of time I've been going to The Tap, I've only eaten once. What I can say with certainty, though, is that the sandwiches, made with local 'Flour Water Salt' bread, are very good value and very nice indeed. The pies always seem to go down a treat, also. Made by the Great Northern Pie Company, they come accompanied with mash and either garden or mushy peas, with gravy to top off. These can be swapped for salad and such. I've never ventured into that area, as they always seem prohibitively-priced, but that appears to be more down to the cost from the pie company, as opposed to The Tap being dear itself. On the prices, you're had-pushed to encounter a pint of real ale above £3.30 and even then that's for the stronger brews.

It's a great place for a chat, a gawp out onto Sunderland Street to watch the world go by and has free wifi, as is rightly de rigueur, today. The staff are always spot-on, not just with their knowledge of current beer on, but also very good to have a chat with. Great people.

A fine place to have on the local ale map, I say cheers to The Tap. Long may it continue.
