“My girl's pub”
Reviewed 6 August 2013 via mobile

This is a beautiful pub ... even from the outside. Another typical English pub but this pub is special to me ... It is where my girlfriend Julie L Dale worked. I used to go to this pub to meet her but she was working. Nevertheless, she always had time for me ... always the kind, carrying and loving person she is ... that was some time ago.

This pub brings food memories for me just as The Leather's Smithy brought me ... that was where Julie and I were out in the cold freezing weather but it was warm when Julie was with me. If I say the food in Stanley Arms is good then some may say I am biased. So I shall just say it's a beautiful pub.

Very comfortable room. It was a coldish evening and the room was very cosy and very clean. Excellent value. Lamb speciality is good but do starve yourselves beforehand to do it justice. Quite difficult to find if you're coming from Macclesfield direction so make sure you have their telephone number to hand .

Had an overnighter in one of the very nice rooms in the barn conversion. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean and had a very comfortable bed, The bathroom was again spotless and had a good shower over the bath. There was a welcoming sherry and mints.

We had dinner there and the food was top notch. Basic British fare but very well done and plenty of it. The breakfast again was very well done and plenty of it.

The host was very pleasant and his well stocked bar had a pleasing array of hand-pulled ales.

There is a huge dog, very friendly, called George who is in charge of the outside area, he came to help with our luggage and was about to get in the back of the car to come away with us until I stopped him.

All-in-all a very pleasant overnight stop in a very picturesque part of England. We will be back. Highly recommended.

A warm welcome, lovely accommodation, comfortable bed, spectacular scenery and home cooked food what more can I say?

We had a very enjoyable short break and we will definitely stay here again as we visit this area regularly.

Lovely location and had a very quiet, peaceful sleep. Room was compact, but clean. Also worth noting the complimentary sherry to drink in the room. Nice breakfast too. However, was not impressed by the evening meal. Do people really travel the world for this food? Why ? The bottom of the oven lamb wasn't cheap (£18) and was good - but came with tired (microwaved?) veg and a small portion of ok chips. The trout main was better, but felt badly let down by the Manchester tart - £4.50 for a dry, thin bit of pastry with a sniff of jam and some coconut. Not impressed. Would certainly stay here again, but then find somewhere else to eat (though there wasn't much else around here)

If you have ever imagined wanting to have a weekend away from it all, lost, staying in a sleepy country pub, with superb food, good beer and sharing banter with the locals, then this place is for you. It is set in some of Englands most stunning countryside, set in a valley below the Cat & Fiddle pass, the A537 Buxton to Macclesfield Rd, the twisty open road through the Peak district loved by bikers and those who crave for something more exciting than the M25!

This perfect example of what a country pub should be has been run by the present landlord for 17 years, his wife is the excellent chef, serving food from local suppliers to her closely guarded recipes. Honest English fare with a pint of guest beer, life doesnt get much better. When you have had enough food, drink and chatter and decide its time for bed and you leave the main building whilst marvelling at the stars (there is NO light pollution here) as you walk to your room in a converted outbuilding. The room we stayed in was not large, but comfortable, with all the amenities we needed. A little tired in places perhaps, but this is a country pub dont forget, not the Ritz! Loads of hot water, a comfy bed and ample tea and coffee making supplies.

We stayed in April, it was lovely and sunny on the Saturday when we arrived, but the following couple of days it became cold. It was clear driving around the area that during the summer with leaves on the trees, the heather in bloom, the area would be even more beautiful. It is in the summer we intend to visit another time, its one place where you want to go back to, because one visit is not enough!

The Stanley Arms is wonderful, like strepping back in time 20 or 30 years but in the right way; so we're not talking about warm beer and chicken in the basket with soggy chips; but what we are talking about is a warm welcome, a roaring fire, locals who actually like you being there (and are very helpful) and a homely feel. You walk into a bar which makes you think 'I remember when pubs used to look like this' and fortuntaly this one still does. The food is excellent, piping hot, freshly cooked, generous portions, sensibly priced. The menu is diverse and interesting and you'd have to be very picky indeed to say there wan't anything there for you. Breakfast was equally good and our room, although the smallest I think (The Bottle Store) was still more than ,big enough for us, extremely comfortable and spotlessly clean. Best thing was probably waking up in the morning, pulling back the curatins to see the sheep quite literally six feet from the window.,..that and being escorted from our room across the carpark to the pub for breakfast by the dog, who made sure we didn't get lost...hard to do when yours is the only building as far as the eye can see.

The location is equally wonderful, so quiet and peaceful. We can't recommend this place enough or say 'thank you' too much to Adrian and Carolyn, who will be your genial hosts when you go there...because you will, if you like simple pleasures and want a truly relaxing place to stay.

We only managed one night, wish we could have stayed many more, but we will go back, of that there is no doubt.
