I have been using this hotel for a number of years and it is always to joy to stay there. The house is lovely, the food is great and the rooms are beautifully furnished. The downside of giving reviews like this is that it might be fully booked next time I want to stay! Will be back in September and October.

WOW!!! Not much more could actually encompass the whole stay! Absolutely lovely manor; very absolutely wonderful meals!! Why leave the grounds to go to a restaraunt in town? The critters are all adorable -- even the rooster! Only problem with him is that the "snooze alarm" doesn't stop! The grounds were absolutely gorgeous. I could not have asked for a more pleasant, hospitable stay anywhere! My husband booked all our accomodations for our first trip to the Lake District (our 21st anniversary trip), and I do have to say everything else for the rest of the trip couldn't measure up! BTW -- did I say it was "absolutely" the very best?

We stayed at Oakwood Park as part of a walk along the Hadrian's Wall national trail. It's about 3 miles away from the trail, but is easy enough to get to (a taxi picked us up at Banks Turret). Our room was the size of some 2-bedroom flats in London--I was astonished when we opened the door. The bathroom was also immense.

This place took me back in time. It has quite a Victorian feel to it, and I found it a relaxing and peaceful place. We ate dinner and breakfast there and enjoyed the food as well.

I'd recommend this place to folks needing a place to stay near Brampton.

I was a little dubious about booking the Oakwood because it is so cheap compared to other hotels in the area and I was nervous there was a good reason for this. I shouldn't have been. If you like Victorian elegance then this place will thrill you as much as it did us. The web site photos are pretty accurate, they were obviously taken recently and not in some bygone heyday.
Brampton is only six miles from Carlisle and even only 20 from Gretna so this is a good place to stay for those attractions. Oakwood is approached along a private tree-lined driveway winding between fields of sheep and when you arrive at the front door find that the only building you can see at all is Oakwood Park Hotel. It is idyllic. A male turkey came up to say hello and the duck troup waddled past to the barn.
The hallway is probably the worst feature and there is a very good reason for this. Walkers. Hadrians Wall is only a few hundred yards away and carpets don't like boots.
Our room No4 is gigantic. The photo on the website doesn't show the two sofas and the writing desk. It is beautifully decorated and full of thoughtful touches (like fruit bowls and bottled water in the bathroom). The bed is very comfortable. The bathroom is also large and the whole place is spotlessly clean.
Surprisingly there is a bar as well as the comfortable lounge and dining room.
We spent a lot of time in the dining room because frankly the food is fabulous. Breakfast was the best we have had in a hotel and the evening meals, which you have to pre-book ,were scrummy. The duck is mouthwateringly succulent.
The hotel is run by mother and daughter team and they seem to have thought of everything, as well as working very hard to make sure guests have what they wish.
I have nothing but the highest praise for them both.

We discovered Oakwood Park by accident a few years ago and would never go anywhere else when visiting that part of the world. You drive up a long drive to an old 'manor house', the door opens on to a long hall, where there is quiet classical music playing. A large lounge is on the left, then a bar, and the dining room on the right. The graceful staircase curves upwards to some amazing bedrooms (we were lucky enough to have the 'family room' this time which could [and would in some hotels] be called a suite). You get a lovely welcome here, and if you want dinner there is a great choice of meat, fish and vegetarian food and puddings - all homemade A pot of coffeee and mints (not one cup and one mint) are served if required in the lounge, in the corner of which are games, books and toys (lovely old dolls and bears etc) for any children that might be staying, and books for the adults too. The decor goes with the house and you can imagine Miss Marple knitting in the corner and feeling quite at home! And the price for all this - under £30 pppn (this is in 2008). I would recommend this place to anyone.
