“Fantastic place to stay for a break”
Reviewed 17 May 2014

This is a wonderful place and the cottages provide ample room for couples/families. I have taken my mum and her two dogs to Long Byres cottages for nearly seven years for a break away. The cottages are clean and tidy have everything that you will need during your stay. My mum is disabled and so the downstairs bedroom with ensuite bathroom is ideal for her. The kitchen is very large and has all the usual equipment, however we always order Harriet's food which is cooked fresh every night and brought to your door. If you stay here you must try her food. It is wonderful with a nice choice of meals and after a long day it makes such a change than slaving over the stove.

The views are amazing and the amount of animals on the farm let alone around the area is wonderful. The owners can't do enough to make you feel welcome and even let us look around the farm. We went on a walk with Harriet a ferret, a cat and her dog. We also met the animals in and around the farm and as long as you ask first, everyone is always so happy to sort out your requests. Well behaved dogs are made very welcome and ours always come back exhausted from all the great walks.

You are only a few minutes from some lovely walks (just turn left out of the door, past the car park and you can head off into the hills). Brampton village has shops for you to purchase any groceries and Carlisle is only 20 mins away.

This is a must if you love quiet areas, walking, gorgeous scenary and animals.

Room Tip: The main two cottages are ideal for families and have fantastic views

What a fantastic escape to a beautiful, breath taking part of the country with our two dogs. Long Byres is a very comfortable and ideally situated location. The cottages are well equipped for self catering and have great views across the valley to catch sight of the wildlife. Harriet makes you feel welcome and nothing is too much trouble. Her evening meals service is outstanding and means you do not need to cook after a day out, either on the Fells, at the Tarn or visiting the local area and Hadrian's Wall or it's just a short hop into Scotland. We have already booked for later in the year.

We took our two nieces (14 & 16) and was worried about things to do but they loved it. We visited the Pencil Museum in Keswick, walked Hadrian's wall and the Tarn was so much fun with loads of things to do. The girls got to see around the farm and meet the animals and learn about the ferret and we met a beautiful Barn Owl. Everyone was lovely and made our holiday great, it was a super base, beautiful views and good walks. Our dogs were also made welcome and behaved around the farm meeting ducks, chickens and loads of other animals. Thank you to Harriet for making it such a wonderful holiday.

Great place for those that love walking and peace. Leave the cottage and turn right you are out there. The accommodation had everything that we needed. We tried Harriets home cooked meals brought to us at 7pm - good size portions of lovely home cooked food, just what we needed after a day on the fells. The village pub (nice well priced pint) is a 12 minute walk but you do need a torch at night. Just a short drive is Brampton with Post Office, Bank, Butchers, a Co-op and fair range of other shops.

I have had many relaxing holidays at Long Byres over the last 20 years. The cottages are comfortable and warm and are ideal for walking holidays, you can walk out of your cottage door and have a wide choice of walks. Harriet's evening meal service is a real bonus and really good quality food. Harriet and Alan make you very welcome, the peace and quiet of the area is so relaxing. This is a working farm with great animals that children would love. The bird life is very interesting in the area. Can recommend walking to the top of Kelky Fell, you will see Black Grouse and Exmoor ponies that they look after at the farm. Long Byres is also an excellent base for Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Forest or Hexham and many other areas of outstanding natural beauty.

We had a great week here to celebrate a special birthday and were not disappointed at all. Nothing was too much trouble for Harriet and her meals were legendary. The accomodation was clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked for cooking, not that we used it much ;-)
We spent most of our time walking or hanging out of the windows watching the plentiful wildlife.
We can't wait to go back and are planning a return visit next year.

We stayed at Long Byres in August and had a fantastic Time. We took our two small dogs with us. We stayed in cottage 2 and found it very comfortable and the facilities were excellent, with an ensuite double on the ground floor . The views were superb from the lounge area and the grassed area outside safely enclosed for us to play with our dogs in We love cooking and the kitchen was the best "kitted out" we have seen in a long time and we were able to cook using local produce, but also tried some of Harriet's wonderful menu meals - well worth it. Long walks locally and around Talkin Tarn are a must, but Carlisle isn't far either. We would recommend this as a great place for a romaniic getaway or family holiday.

Room Tip: All of the cottages are good
