Coombe Mill
Reviewed 6 January 2014 via mobile

I have never been away from home at Christmas but this year we got the opportunity to go to Coombe Mill and it was easily the most stress free Christmas we have ever had (apart from trying to for everything in the car before hand).
We stayed in Heligan with our children aged 13, 5, 2 and 6 months. It is a stunning log cabin that's bigger than our own house. Being December we were worried that we would be cold but we actually had to switch the heating off as the log burner was so efficient (and gorgeous to relax in front of). There was plenty of room to play, lots of storage and all the facilities you need with young children ie. washing machine, tumble drier and dishwasher.
The farm itself is set in a valley with a river running through the middle. They have a feed run every morning (even on Christmas Day) where the children got to feed all the animals - chickens, sheep, pigs, ducks, wallabies, goats, donkeys, and the most beautiful deer - my son was convinced the stag was Rudolph! They are transported around the farm on a tractor and each child gets a turn to drive (with Farmer Nick or Farmer Kim). The feed run lasts about an hour and then you are free to do your own thing throughout the day until a scheduled miniature train ride at 4pm. This was made extra special by them creating a Santa's grotto inside the shed and Santa himself turned up and gave the kids presents on Christmas Eve.
We didn't venture off the farm apart from a brief shopping trip to Asda and the kids had plenty to keep them occupied. They have plenty of toys available in the properties and in their store room, plus a couple of play areas with a pirate ship, trampoline, climbing equipment and zip line.
We chose to explore the farm ourselves in the daytime, played pooh sticks on the bridge and enjoyed the play areas.
Fiona and Nick also suggested we went to a Christingle service in St Tudy on Christmas Eve which was magical and we were treated to mince pies and mulled wine in the street alongside another visit from Santa and then were invited to their home for drinks and a buffet!
Even Christmas dinner was a great success despite being cooked in a strange oven!
If you are looking for a get away from it all family holiday then this is perfect. Be aware there is very little phone signal in the valley but there is free wifi. It can be a bit patchy though when inside the property as their insulation is too good!
If you have a baby you will need a baby carrier and they do have one to borrow if you need it, along with lots of other equipment from waterproofs to wellies and even DVDs and games for the kids.
It is a family run business and all Fiona and Nicks kids get involved and help out. They're all polite and knowledgable and make you feel welcome - my 13 year old has made friends for life!

You can't fault the location. Views are absolutely beautiful. Our cabin was right by the river - lovely. However, the activities were very disappointing. The website really talks up the involvement of the children, helping Farmer Nick, but this is only very first thing in the morning for about an hour. You throw some feed to the chickens and goats... And that's kinda it! It isn't really a farm in all honesty as they don't produce goods for market. The animals are kept purely for guest entertainment - which is fine, but felt it was a bit over-sold on the website. Farmer Nick was very friendly and good with the children, letting a different child help him drive the tractor each morning, but his wife could do with learning a few social skills! She can be quite abrupt and rude! But I'm sure it's not intentional. There was home cooked, frozen meals on offer in reception - we tried the Baileys bread and butter pudding which was very bad so we cooked our own meals during our sty. Lappa Valley steam railway in nearby Newquay is worth a visit... Lots to do there and great fun.

Despite my criticisms, we would probably go again as there aren't many other places like Coombe Mill where the children can get involved (however short these sessions might be!) and my 3yr old son adored it there and that's what it was about anyway, but as an adult you do go expecting more so go with an open mind

Room Tip: Valency riverside lodge is small but was perfectly adequate for 2 adults and a child. Very cosy and...

I'm so sorry you found me rude, this has been bothering me ever since, it certainly wasn't intentional so my sincere apologies and I hope you will indeed come and see us again. The feed fun we make as involved as those staying want it to be, some days it can take upto 2 hours others nearer an hour. I'm with you on Lappa Valley, it was a firm favourite with our children when they were young too.

Coombe Mill is a well run holiday cottage site in a great location. We stayed in the "Trevarno" scandinavian lodge, which came with a fantastic upstairs play loft, which our 2 year old loved.

Good points:
High quality, recently built/furnished accomodation.
Daily tours around the farm with Farmer Nick were popular, if a little chaotic.
Tasty frozen home-cooked meals available in the on site shop.
Lots of attractions for children in this part of Cornwall, including some wet weather alternatives.

Bad points:
No mobile reception, and very patchy wifi.
20+ minute drive to the beaches at Rock and Polzeath.

Overall, we enjoyed this holiday, and would come back again in future.

still a bit sad that our amazing holiday at Coombe Mill had to come to an end and we had to head home - but hey ho, we will certainly be booking to go back :) the weather was wet and yukky for a lot of the time, but it didn't dampen any of our enjoyment or enthusiasm for the holiday, for Coombe Mill, for Cornwall. Our kids are 9, 7, 6 and 4, and they all got so much out of being in such a wonderful environment - the daily feed runs and tractor ride were a huge hit with all of them, and given that our kids are proper southern soft townies most of the time, we were thrilled to see them getting so actively involved with the feeding of the farm animals and finding out so much about the countryside. The electronic gadgetry that they are normally welded to lay discarded in our cottage, and the TV was only on really when we were chilling out in the late afternoon after days of fun on the farm or off exploring the attractions and sights of Cornwall. Fiona and Nick were the most amazing hosts for this holiday, the least pretentious people I have met, just the right level of interaction with the guests, but mines of information about the farm, the area etc if you need to know anything. The cottage we stayed in (willow) was beautifully appointed, very spacious, and had everything needed for a family holiday without being over the top. The whirlpool bath was a huge hit with the kids, have never known them so eager to hop in! There are shops and amenities in local villages, and larger supermarkets in nearby towns - but to be honest we could have lived on poached eggs all week from the wonderful eggs that the kids collected each day on the tractor ride/feed run. I don't know if there was a best bit to our holiday, it was all just amazing - there's always that worry when you book a holiday with children whether it's going to be right for your family, but this was more than right, it was PERFECT.

We have just returned from our second visit to Coombe Mill and have already booked for next year. Our family consisted of three generations from 2 to 66 and we all had a great time staying in one of the Scandinavian lodges which was very well equipped, comfortable and cosy. The weather was not great but we were prepared with wellies and waterproofs so were able to enjoy everything that the farm has to offer. Halloween fell during our stay and Nick and Fiona made it great fun, dressing up the tractor for the feed run and turning the train into a ghost train for the children to enjoy once it got dark and before they set off round the farm "trick or treating". Our grandchildren made friends with the other children and would have been happy not to leave the farm all week, enjoying the outdoor and indoor play areas, fishing and visiting the animals. Having stayed in other family friendly accommodation Coombe Mill is the one that ticks all the boxes for us, roll on our next visit.

This is our second time at Coombe Mill and it will not be our last!

The accommodation is spot on, clean and tidy with enough room for muddy boots and waterproofs.

Nick and Fiona have thought of everything. We forgot the waterproof suit for our 3 year old - not to worry there are spares available to borrow!

The feed run is awesome giving kids and adults alike the chance to engage with the animals and learn about real life! Nick's commentary on the way round is spot on - informative and funny - anything you need to know or are just inquisitive about - just ask.

We have been kept up to date with farm life throughout the year by Fiona's blog and it's really nice to see the results of the cart and the train. Great information and fantastic pictures to keep you wanting to come back throughout the year.

Then there is the setting - idyllic! Cornwall is beautiful at the best of times but this little pocket is truly stunning. From the river - where we keep an eye out for salmon whilst playing pooh sticks to the woodland where the jays play and the buzzard soar above. Amazing. It really really takes your breath away - particularly if your usual view is a city high rise.

Any previous reviews about safety need to be ignored - this is the British countryside and we are all the better for it. If you bring your children keep an eye on them and let them explore - they will revel in the freedom and the joys of nature. They might even interact with other children without the need for a 'play date' and be better people for it.

We have travelled all over the country and the world and have finally found what we were looking for.

Booked this holiday with the highest expectations and they were superseded! We had a wonderful relaxing family holiday. The kids enjoyed the freedom that this rural setting gave them while being able to make friends with other holiday makers. Can't wait to go back!!
