Stayed in a 4 bedroom lodge (6 adults, 2 children and a small dog) and the lodge was a great size. Our lodge (number 4) had a great uninterrupted view and the hot tub was a great way to chill out. Staff were very friendly and I would recommend anyone to visit.

I stayed in a lodge at Castlewood lodges on 2nd to 5th August with 4 other friends. We were pleasantly surprised with the lodge. It was modern and spacious with a bottle of rose waiting for us :-) The living room/dining room/kitchen was all open plan. The living room was kitted with a huge television and a docking station. Only had 2 small couches and the lodge could accommodate 6 people. The kitchen was fully kitted out with everything you would need for a short stay, even dishwasher tablets!

There were three rooms, 1 double and 2 twin rooms. These were perfect for our group. The double room was en suite which was fantastic as 5 girls trying to get showered and ready in the morning meant there were 2 showers and less queueing. The shower in the double room was fantastic, it has the option for the normal shower head then the huge round rain shower head, it was fantastic and rather powerful.

The hot tub on the patio outside was a wonderful way to spend our evenings, even though it was a bit chilly as the night went on, the hot tub stayed at around 39-40 degrees so nice and warm.

The lodges are pretty much in the middle of nowhere with absolutely beautiful scenery around. The nearest civilisation is Strachan but it's a small village with no amenities. The next nearest town is Banchory. This has shops and supermarkets for anything you my not have brought with you initially.

On our weekend we went to Aboyne Highland Games about 12 miles inland which was recommended by the owner when he came round to check we had settled in fine. This was a great day out and we had the weather for it. The following day we went out for a walk then spent the rest of the day chilling in the lodge. We watched films and spent more time in the hot tub.

I would definitely go back here, we had a fantastic time and felt very welcome! I don't think I can find anything bad to say.

**My rating for swimming pool is for the hot tub!

This is our third stay at Castlewood and we were delighted that the high standards of the lodges and cleanliness have been maintained.
Beautiful lodges with fabulous views, watching the deer running in the morning was a definite bonus. Our group consisted of grandparents, parents, young adult and twins aged 9, who all agreed that we had a great time. Hot tub was a big hit with the family, adults relaxed and the children loved that the colour of the water changes from green, blue, red etc. Soft play area is free to residents in the lodges, which was well used on our only rainy day! Staff all lovely and friendly and more than willing to help. No shops on the door step but Morrison's and Tesco is just a short drive away, very thoughtful welcome pack, so no need to rush to the shops, plus the soft play area serves food too. Peaceful, tranquil and will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Ask for mountain view lodges.

Spent the weekend as part of a Henny great place very well equipped lodges, clean and comfortable Fantastic hot tub and the beauticians who came to pamper us were wonderful. Really fab weekend!!! The only downside was the noise from the soft bear centre early in morning as our lodge was very close to it and as a nursery nurse thought I'd taken my work with me lol!!!! But had a fab weekend totally recommend

Stayed here for mayday weekend with 3 friends, weather was great, the service was also really good 'Willie' came around everyday to make sure we were alright.
Lodge was immaculate, such a cute touch the bottle of wine and welcome pack too.
Will definitley return in the not too distant future.
Only downside had moaning neighbours which is always pot luck wherever you go.

We stayed here during the second week in April, 2 adults one teenager.
The first impression of the lodge is good, yes they're a bit close together which spoils the views a little, but they're not terrible.
The living area of the lodge is nicely kitted out plenty of space to move around and decent quality furnishings.
The kitchen area is well equipped with plenty of utensils, lots and lots of glasses and 5 or 6 bowls and plates.
What REALLY let this property down is cleanliness and the quality of the sleep.
The kitchen area had breadcrumbs on the worktops, filthy bin lid, floor not cleaned and oven trays still dirty from previous occupants. The windows had obviously been splashed from previous occupants of the hot tubs and not cleaned either - for a 5* lodge I expect better.
There were two double rooms and a twin in our Kerloch Lodge, I'm a typical height Scottish woman and I could reach out and touch both sides of the double bed. I could also feel the bed base when I sat down on the bed because the mattress was very poor quality. The quilt was too light for my liking, summerweight quilt and cheap pillows where the filling had broken up and gone into clumps.
Because the bed was so small my husband ended up sleeping in the twin room with both single bed quilts. Not very romantic.
Paying five hundred pounds for four nights in April feels a bit excessive if everything isn't sparkling, it feels like they are relying on previous occupants doing the cleaning for them, but at those prices I want it checked thoroughly before I arrive.
The woman at the soft play centre who checked us in was really nice and friendly. The Hoseasons blurb says you can "indulge yourself at the onsite restaurant" which we thought would be great as the lodges are not easily accessible using public transport, however the onsite restaurant is actually the café area of the soft play centre and it closes at 5. Bit misleading I thought.
One plus point is the hot tubs are big, checked every day by Willie the maintenance man ( ours wasn't up to temp the first night as he'd emptied and refilled it that day)
If you've got young kids the soft play centre is free to use for lodge residents.

Sorry Kerloch Lodge, but no 5* review for you this time.

We stayed at the Castlewood Lodges recently for a mid week break.
There were 4 families in our party for family celebration. 2 families shared the 3 bedroom lodge whilst we shared the 4 bedroom lodge.
The lodges surpassed all our expectations, they are modern, spacious and clean.
The main area has seating, television, iPod docking speakers, dining table/chairs, open plan kitchen.

The kitchen has everything you need to cook with plenty of crockery, pots, pans, bottle opening, tin opener etc.
The welcome pack includes bottle of wine, bread, milk, butter, jam, some bin bags and dishwasher tablets. However as it is self catering I would recommend taking along extra dishwasher tablets, bin bags, tin foil, washing powder.
It was great to have the option of a full kitchen with oven, grill and microwave.

Banchory is a 6 mile drive away so it is easy to go into the town centre if you have a car. It is worth bearing in mind that Strachan which is 1 1/2 miles away has no shops, so best to come with your supplies unless you are happy to do a Tesco run to Banchory.

The hot tub was a real bonus for us. We had a problem one morning with it not heating up and it was quickly fixed.
We even went in at night so even if it is a bit cooler the water still stays nice and warm. A nice touch is that plastic cups are provided in case you would like to have an evening drink while enjoying the hot tub.

There are no walks nearby. But a couple of mile drive takes you to some nice forest trails that even the 70+ grandparents managed no problem.

On site there is a restaurant and soft play area for young children. We did not try this out but it was definitely popular with other guests and locals.

The only critisism I can offer is that there was only one double room. We went as 2 families so 2 of the adults were stuck in single beds. It wasnt really a problem for us but would have been nice to have the option of another double bed. Perhaps an option to have them clipped together.

We really enjoyed our stay and would happily recommend Castlewood Lodges for a family stay.
