“Christmas lost!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2010

Have just spent a disappointing Christmas at Shearings/Coast and Country Grand Atlantic.
Apart from a few Christmas Trees and a little bit of tinsel, it was a very ordinary weekend. The Festive Spirit seemed to have passed by. Considering majority of guests were elderly people, the hotel was freezing cold, the heating was off during the day, and many bedrooms were very cold. The car park was like an ice rink, and no attempt had been made to salt the disabled parking bays. They couldn't even be bothered to arrange for any newspapers for Boxing Day. On arriving at the hotel on Thurs. 23rd many of the elderly guests did not set foot out of the hotel until the 27th to go home, as the conditions underfoot were too treacherous. Entertainment was minimal, and very uncomfortable because of the lack of heating. The winner of the 'quiz' on 23rd was given the table next to the radiator the following evening!! It is certainly one to miss next Christmas.

Mare in a snowstorm. I think more than 120 guests had been expected but only about 40 arrived so we were immediately upgraded to sea view rooms.
We were disappointed to find that Shearings had decided on minimilistic Christmas decorations unlike in previous years
We had booked a special offer, 3 nights for the price of two, so value for money our weekend would be hard to beat and we did enjoy it because the efforts of the very friendly staff many of whom we recognised from previous years compensated for Shearing's shortcomings.
There was no heat in our rooms and the outside temperature was sub zero when we arrived but a quick chat with the manager revealed that the thermostat was located in Reception where there were two log fires. Resetting this to a higher temperature immediately restored heat to all the hotel .Problem solved !,
A lift for disabled guests has been installed adjacent to the steep front entrance steps but no-one, including the receptionist, managed to get it to work.
We had an isolated table in the dining room which ensured we did not have to have meaningless conversations with strangers and the ubiquitous dust covered plastic daisy table decoration was immediately removed by one of the very friendly waitresses. The food was excellent value for money and as always generous portions. Unfortunately there is always a basket in the dining room requesting staff gratuities which is usually ignored, not because the staff are in any way deficient, but simply because most guests do not like to see a "Begging Bowl "
Shearings have owned and been refurbishing this hotel for 10 years. Unfortunately the alterations appear to have been carried out by a keen but inept DIYer with limited tools and a miniscule budget.
For example:
My room was decorated in beige and dark brown with dark brown furniture. There were no drawers apart from one shallow one in the bedside locker half filled with the Gideon Bible. My dressing table was an old washbasin covered by a brown painted board. The water and drain pipes were still in situ though disconnected (See Photo) By my bed was the remains of an old wall mounted radio...disconnected.My telephone was also disconnected.
The bathroom had been recently redecorated but the heated towel rail mounted above the toilet was disconnected, the toilet roll holder was hanging from, but not screwed to, the wall, the mirror above the basin was too low and I had to bend down to shave. There was a damp patch on the ceiling caused no doubt by a leak in the room above mine.
Shearings are aware that they have a lovely building with a large carpark in an ideal situation and they know the staff will do their best to ensure guests enjoy their stay. So why should they see no reason to spend money on refurbishments.
Will we go there again ?Yes if we aren't blacklisted.
Would we recommended it to our friends ? No

Hotel poor value, heating non existent no hot water before 7a.m. or heat. Very cold and draughty. Poor food quality vegetables very overcooked a 5year old could have done better. Restaurant very draughty and drinks very expensive. Restaurant staff very pleasant, but Reception could do with going to charm school.

Having been to many Shearings Hotel this was a great disappointment. Will not return.

Had a lovely 4 night stay at the hotel which is on the front at Weston-Super-Mare, not far from the pier and the big wheel, shops are about 5 minutes walk into the town. The room was clean, with comfy bed and well appointed except for chair (see photo) but not oversized. We had main TV channels, hairdryer, trouser press and a good bathroom. Pity when we were there the boiler broke so there wasn't any hot water for two nights. They compensated for this by extending the free bar to start at 5.30 instead of 7.30pm. The room was really warm and as it was freezing outside this was welcome. The reception is very welcoming with log effect fires and a grand piano playing. There are free newspapers for use in the reception area. The staff were friendly and everything was clean. The food was lovely but if you want anything more than basic you have to pay extra. The gala meal was a disappointment, it only consisted of an extra course of 3 thin slices of melon. The breakfast was good and you could have porrige, cereals, rolls, crossants and full English. Everything cooked to order. We got the complete holiday really cheap and its good value for money if you look for late deals from Shearings. Weston-Super-Mare doesn't have snow but it was absolutely freezing weather which made it all the nicer to go back to a warm hotel.

Made it by train from Sussex which was under snow. Relieved to enter good sized clean bedroom with heater going as well as rads on (though not very hot). Bathroom chilly; water usually hot enough. Beds comfy . Staff all friendly and helpful and meals fine. Very smart reception, lounges and dining room. Enjoyed exploring the town, had ride on wheel in brilliant sunshine on the Sunday, after watching hyundrerds of Santas and Fairies race along beach for charity.

This hotel has two things in its favour.. Its warm & the staff are most helpful. The rooms are dingy& badly furnished. The sea view ,for which we had paid a supplement, was unviewable as the window was almost opaque due to perrished double glazing.
The food was poor... tiny portions of reheated GLOOP. After sending back two main courses one evening I just gave up. The dishwater coffee was about the same standard so no suprise there. Would i recommend it !Off hand cant think of anyone I dislike that much. Please please Shearings.. this is meant to be one of your top flight hotels !!
