“Very disappointing dump!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2014

Got there evening time, place looked nice from outside. That's where it ends. Booked Princess Anne room (a surprise for my partner) for one night as we were seeing a show in Weston. First off, reception gave us key to wrong room (ordinary four poster one, very shabby and quite dark and dingy). Stormed off down the stairs to get the key to the room I had booked. This time the receptionist gave us the right room but the wrong key...back down the stairs again! Not a very good start to our romantic break. Eventually we were able to get into the beloved Princess Anne room ....my partner and I were completely UNDERwhelmed by it. It is a lot smaller than it look s in the cleverly shot photos and video on the hotel website and the furniture has seen better days, it is all marked ...horrible just horrible! Breakfast in the morning was ok but the waitress was pottering round clearing up noisily around us, surely she could have waited ten minutes for us to leave the dining area.

We held our wedding at the Royal Hotel in November 2013 and I have to say I was deeply disappointed. The room for the ceremony was set out nicely and the registrar was very helpful. The wedding planner who I initially dealt with was not the person I ended up with on the day. She seemed to have no idea of what our plans were . I had specifically asked for my entrance song to be played right until the end but it was cut off abruptly. The other two pieces that were played during our signing of the register we could barely hear and the same with our exit music.
We had been told there would be a 45 minute room turnaround for the meal. We waited over 2 hours ! Five of our guests left altogether and my daughter took her four children across to McDonalds because they were so hungry ! The food was good but a long time between courses. We were still eating when the D.J. arrived for the evening and he seemed to be blaming us for running late ! I found the resident D.J. very rude. He had been given a list with some our favourite songs we wanted playing but we had to keep asking him to play some and when he did he would very sarcastically comment that he now had to play one of our choices.
When we were ready to go to our room we were told we hadn't booked in, although this was included in our package. We didn't realise that as the bride and groom we would have to actually book in when it was a complimentary room.
I would not, therefore , recommend this as a wedding venue to anybody.

Despite being one of the smartest hotels in Weston, I've always found the atmosphere here to be unstuffy and very comfortable when I have dined here at lunchtime over the years.
Sadly, despite an attentive waitress, standards seem to have slipped of late. The Carvery has an excellent range of vegetables, but the joint of beef was overcooked and dry and it didn't help that the server persisted in using a blunt knife to try and carve it.
I had the impression that lunchtime diners are few and far between as no other diners entered the restaurant while we there, and felt that a little more attention to detail might remedy this and merit the cost of £9.50 per plate.

Like another reviewer we had a Groupon deal on Tapas & cocktails. It was a very good deal but....it took well over 25 minutes for them to make our cocktails. We do realise the bar staff were rather busy but they obviously decided to serve everyone else who just walked in after us & went straight upto the bar, totally forgetting us sitting at a table where they had taken our order! It is also a little disconcerting to be called " my darling", or "my lovely" all the time?! The tapas when they eventually arrived, looked quite good, in traditional tapas style dishes, but actually were all microwaved or deep fried from frozen. The piri piri prawns were just awful, smelling & tasting of strong fish paste. We decided not to eat them in case they were "off" & in all fairness, the waitress changed the whole dish for something else. However, there is just no reason for us to return here for a second experience of The Royal, which is a pity really, as it is in such a good spot in WsMare.

Lovely food, great sea view, helpful staff, good location.

As we left, our taxi driver confirmed our opinion that we had visited the best hotel in Weston. with easy access to both town and sea front, a very pleasant three night stay.

Book with confidence

Room Tip: Sea view rooms bathed in light at night
