“Afternoon tea”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Lovely historic hotel, afternoon tea nice, but after having afternoon tea at lots of places I felt this was nothing special, and a little uncomfortable as the bar lady/waitress was very stressed as busy but on her own.

This is the second time we have held our family weekend at the Royal Hotel. There were 27 family members this time and everything ran very smoothly. The rooms were lovely, clean and very comfortable. The atmosphere was relaxing and the friendly staff worked very hard to attend to all our needs, especially on the Saturday night when we had all the family at the evening meal to celebrate our mothers 82nd birthday. I had to contact the hotel to advise them that one member of our family had just found out they have celiac disease, but I was told it wouldn't be a problem any they could cater for all her dietary requirements, even going to the trouble of buying in bread especially her breakfast toast. The entertainment on the Friday evening was excellent. We all had a fantastic weekend and will be returning again.

This was OK for a night but not for something longer. The room was clean but the decor was very heavy and rather gloomy. Just about every floorboard squeaked which seemed to amplify during the night when trying to tip toe to the loo. On the plus side parking is complimentary so ignore the very expensive pay and display machine on arrival and head straight to reception to get a pass to place on your dashboard. We were on a DBB rate which was excellent value for the A La Carte menu, as this was not a carvery evening. I paid a deposit at the time of online booking which is fair enough but then had to pay upfront the whole bill on checking in and set up a separate tab for any extras which was not very welcoming.

Room Tip: Take a room on the second floor as you will not have anyone walking on noisy floorboards above you.

Had a really wonderful time at our 'afternoon tea',.. We were made very welcome, relaxing atmosphere with friendly staff, attentive to all our needs, a special mention for Kay, our waitress, an asset to the hotel. The presentation of the food was just lovely. Left with the feeling that we will definitely be returning .

We were taken to the restaurant at the Royal Hotel by relatives who live in Weston-Super-Mare. It was their recommendation. The Royal Hotel is a traditional hotel, in a historic building, with plenty of history and a good seafront location, .

The food was acceptable but the overwhelming memory of our visit was the very poor service from the restaurant staff, which somewhat spoilt the evening for all of us. This sorry state of affairs was, unfortunately, rather an embarrassment for our relatives. Whilst it would be unrealistic to expect the level of service found in, say, a five star hotel, it is reasonable to expect a modicum of professional competence. Sadly this was not the case as the staff gave the impression of having received barely any training at all; it was almost amateur. Having said that the restaurant staff were friendly.

I don't like writing negative reports and have written very few. However, the purpose of writing this negative review is to be constructive in alerting the management for the need to train their restaurant staff in such matters as etiquette of serving to table, which cutlery goes with which course etc.

I would have hoped the bad old days of complacency, at UK seaside resort hotels and restaurants, would have passed long ago. Media, such as TripAdvisor, militates against that state. Good service is paramount to a success of a restaurant and there is nothing wrong with a restaurant striving for service excellence as it is noticed by the dining public and appreciated by them too.

I thus encourage the hotel's management to institute a training programme for their restaurant staff.in time for this year's summer holiday season. I wish the hotel a successful holiday season and I invite the hotel's management to respond to this posting. i do so hope this matter will have been rectified in time for your visit.

Chose this hotel without booking due to excellent central location and on site parking. The hotel is an old Victorian? style pile found in most traditional seaside resorts. As a result, it looks somewhat dated, the floor are uneven and squeak. The windows are single glazed, though our sea facing room was quiet, as there is a splendid lawned area belonging to the hotel that runs as far as the promenade. The staff were helpful and friendly throughout and the rooms seemed clean. The breakfast was fine.
Our main negative was the evening meal which offered lots of our favourite dishes with pricing that suggested they should be top quality. Unfortunately, the meals proved to be a disappointment. Most were pretty tasteless, except for the bouillabaisse which seemed to be tomato soup with bits of seafood etc added to justify its name.
Unlikely to visit Weston Super Mare again as we were passing through, but would stay in the hotel if we were, but eat elsewhere.
