This place is to die for........luxury at it's best - unpretentious and soul renewing. We rented a beautiful and spacious self catering cottage for 4 (which slept 6 of us extremely comfortably). The cottage forms part of what must be the old stables block of a large country house (soon to open as a hotel/art gallery). The cottage was just the right mix of luxury (beautiful kitchen and bathroom) and homeliness (informal antique furniture, wood burner in the lounge and original artwork throughout). The owners (Ralph and Roland) live on site and have a background in antique furniture, art dealing and restoration of old buildings and you can tell. It is beautiful. We were also shown round the attached 2 bedroom cottage, which has just been finished and is gorgeous - very appropriate for a romantic hideaway - it has a 'hollywood hideaway snug in the forest' feel to it.
The hotel itself will open in the next few months. the already completed rooms are beautiful. Extremely large and filled with retro style antique furniture and original art - some rooms even have wood burning stoves.
The gardens are beautiful and expansive and include a croquet lawn, a large and secluding walled garden full of fruit trees and a main lawn has tall mature trees surrounding a long and elaborate dining table. All of this is at the guests disposal at any time of the day.
Ralph and Roland are themselves lovely! Genuinely interesting, relaxed and friendly and yet very unassuming as hosts. Roland cooked us delicious banana bread in time for arrival and flapjack on our departure. Ralph gave us the background and history of the original art work on display in our cottage and we were delighted to discover that much of it belonged to quite prominent artists. Even more amazing when we thought about how relaxed they were about having our young children around it (we had to beg them to remove the bull terrier newspaper sculpture - the temptation for the children would have been too much).
North Wales is beautiful and there is so much to do. The scenery is breathtaking, there is excellent walking and mountain biking, castles (lots of a massive ones) , beaches, steam train rides gallore (and not the poxy kiddy kind), and several National Trust houses and gardens. And when you've had enough of the immediate vicinity Anglesey has masses to offer as does Llandudno and Chester.
In summary, If you are looking for a holiday cottage that has that something really special for a very reasonable price, then this really is the place. We chanced upon it on through a google search, but it will soon be discovered by the masses. Get in there quick before the owners hit the big time.
