“A great place to experience a night in a castle”
Reviewed 5 July 2014 via mobile

This is a truly unique and exceptional experience. This is an ancient manor that has a rich history. With immaculate gardens filled with peacocks and and the owner's dogs, it is like living on an estate from many generations ago. The owners and the housekeeper are extremely friendly and accommodating. They fixed us breakfast every day and gave us several tips for places to eat or visit.

Because this is a very old house, you can expect that it does not have all the modern comforts. For example, the floors are very creaky and uneven, and the lighting is very low. There is no wifi in the rooms, but there is wifi in the community parlor room. Unfortunately, there are no plugs in that room, so you need to charge any device that you are using before using the wifi.

Be sure to walk the grounds and check out the gardens. During the day, other parts of the house were opened, so you can walk through the rest of it. The town is about a 20 minute walk and we found plenty of places to eat in town. There are several historical sights that are driving distance, so you can use this as a base to several of these.

Peter and I have just returned home after such a wonderful weekend at Gwydir Castle. We were made to feel at home and so much more than paying guest's in this amazing place. We will treasure the memories of this charismatic house and tranquil gardens, not forgetting Paddy's delicious breakfast!

I feel it's an honour to be able to stay in one of these beautifully restored, heritage listed properties. The owners (Judy & Paul) have spent 20 years lovingly restoring this property - and it's not over! My room (the Duke of Beaufort's room) is very warm, I awoke to peacocks calling, a delicious breakfast (thanks Paddy) which kept me going well in to the afternoons each day, and a lovely chat with other guests. There are 3 guest rooms in the property so you feel like you have the castle to yourself. Entrance to view the castle during opening hours (10am-4pm) is part of your nightly fee and you can wander through the castle and gardens in peace & quiet. They have a chapel up the road which you can get the keys to visit (this is where Judy & Peter were married).
Judy has written a book - Castles in the Air - WELL worth reading - and ideally before you stay/visit as you will get a much better sense of the property and the enormity of what these two have undertaken. There is a couple of villages nearby - one you can walk to, Llanwarst (an old market village). The castle has wi-fi in the panelled room (where you have breakfast), each room has it's own bathroom (mine wasn't en-suite but large and right next door, but believe the King's room has an en-suite).
Definitely rent a car as there are many fabulous roads to explore given it's based in Snowdonia.
Try the New Inn pub to meet the locals in Llanwwarst, or the Old Ship in Trefwir (?) = nearby village - for a great pub meal.
Photo's - unfortunately I can't seem to upload my photo's to this review but I added some to my review on Gwydir Castle - but their website is: www.gwydircastle.co.uk

Room Tip: they are all unique - one is self catering (the Gate House) I believe, but all are warm and spacious...

Enchanting location excellent hosts.
Castle is full of genuine history. An intriguing work in progress by the owners. The grounds are exceprional and secluded.
For the adventurous Snowdinia and the Welsh Coast are only a matter of a few minutes away.

While it may not be for everyone, Gwydir "Castle" is fascinating, charming, quiet, and comfortable. We stayed in the "King's Room" for two nights. The house had fallen into virtual ruin when acquired by present owners who are engaged on decades long restoration project. Seeing the wood paneling repatriated from Wm. Randolph Hearst and the NY Metropolitan is a special treat. As guests, the historical part of the house is opened to you after breakfast for a private and leisurely self guided tour. And you can't miss the peacocks as you walk the grounds!

2001-My husband & I made reservations to stay at Gwydir Castle. When we arrived, Judith Corbett warmly greeted us and showed us to our room. Very nice 4 poster bed with a picture on the wall of Wynn in all his glory. My only request was that I be able to experience every room in the castle and take photos. She was very obliging. The Next morning, I awoke at 5:30AM & ventured off with my trusty camera. I WAS ECSTATIC TO SAY THE LEAST! The most exciting room was roped off-(supposedly this was the room that Wynn had buried the body of his housekeeper behind the fireplace and who was enamored with him & desired a more permanent relationship). The castle grounds were just beautiful. Paddy served us with a wonderful breakfast. She talked me into trying 'blood pudding'! All I can say is -YUCK! We met a nice young couple who stayed in the 2nd room. That evening, Paddy served us wine, cheese & crackers by a roaring fire. Please read Judy's book, "Castles In The Air" before going. She gives a detail account of their history converting the castle to its present glory.

Room Tip: At the time, there were only 2 rooms. Both have a lot of character & history.
