Though Richmond upon Thames is an absolutely beautiful area (I currently live there), I feel that it lacks a little in food quality compared to the rest of London. The White Swan is, however, one of the best restaurants I've been to in London. The restaurant has a menu that changes daily, but I've had sausages and mash, a duck confit dish, and a chicken and wine dish that were all excellently prepared, elegant, flavorful, and delicious. The wine and drink list isn't extensive but the wines I've had were all quite good and the bartender is very willing to make recommendations based on your tastes and what you're eating. The atmosphere is very cozy and inviting with its rustic wood beamed ceiling, hardwood floors and rugs, old photos of Richmond, easy chairs, and blazing fire place. It is a favorite with the locals, particularly because it's dog friendly. Many people bring their dogs with them to the restaurant and it's not uncommon to see 4 or 5 well behaved dogs resting under tables and chairs (if dogs bother you, this is probably not the place for you).
