“One of the better restaurants in Richmond”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 March 2014

Though Richmond upon Thames is an absolutely beautiful area (I currently live there), I feel that it lacks a little in food quality compared to the rest of London. The White Swan is, however, one of the best restaurants I've been to in London. The restaurant has a menu that changes daily, but I've had sausages and mash, a duck confit dish, and a chicken and wine dish that were all excellently prepared, elegant, flavorful, and delicious. The wine and drink list isn't extensive but the wines I've had were all quite good and the bartender is very willing to make recommendations based on your tastes and what you're eating. The atmosphere is very cozy and inviting with its rustic wood beamed ceiling, hardwood floors and rugs, old photos of Richmond, easy chairs, and blazing fire place. It is a favorite with the locals, particularly because it's dog friendly. Many people bring their dogs with them to the restaurant and it's not uncommon to see 4 or 5 well behaved dogs resting under tables and chairs (if dogs bother you, this is probably not the place for you).

“Charming place, great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 January 2014

It was a cold and crispy evening, so walking to the place through the river was something to write home about; better still was to get there and sit next to the fire place; cannot beat that.
We were welcomed very warmly by the waiting staff. They provided us with very attentive and professional service throughout the diner- well done team!
The wine menu had a variety of choices and reasonable prices.
The food menu again was quite good.
We started with Haloumi salad. And if I want to be critical about it, I'd probably say it was poor on the amount of Haloumi cheese they added to it - this is obviously due to the price they charged for the started salad - quite expensive for what it is.. A few more pieces of cheese would have made this a great dish.
As a main course, we opted for the venison, which was cooked to perfection, had a good portion size. The green beans were cooked perfectly and hold that crunchiness that we expect. The only criticism, if I have to do it, is that the beans were not trimmed, but again not to worry much about it.
My great disappointment was the desert. I chose the banoffi pie. That tasted really bad. i could not eat it. It looked as if it was bought from a cheap supermarket. Sorry guys, just being honest here. I do hope you put some thoughts about it and provide a better desert next time.

“Christmas meal with work colleagues”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 December 2013

We booked this with a work colleague and I was slightly reluctant due to the long walk from Richmond High Street in the cold and dark! However what a delight - and well worth the walk! We had a large group and had booked our meals in advance. The starters and main all arrived together - not that usual for a group of 10. The food was excellent. I had pigeon breast, a first for me, and it was lovely. Follow this with the roast pork belly and you are in for a delight. The warmed chocolate cake with ice cream finished me off or was that the excellent red wine? The service was excellent- nothing was too much trouble. Much joy had by all. Would definitely go there again - maybe in the summer to try the excellent varieties of ale.

“Hidden Treasure”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 December 2013

I had been for a drink here before but then saw the menu and liked the look of it. On this basis, and with a local friend's endorsement, thirteen of us went here for our work Christmas lunch. Richard, the manager, was very helpful with all the arrangements, the food and drink was excellent, and the waitress service first class - attentive but never rushed. Portions were of a good size and the food was very well presented. Two very small points - I would have liked one more roast potato, and a lot more (though I know this is a style thing) Brandy Anglais with the Christmas pudding. Overall, very impressed and will definitely return, both in a smaller group and probably a return Christmas visit next year.
