“A lovely stay”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Stayed for 1 night after a friends wedding in Richmond Park. Nothing spectacular but everything was as it should be. Clean, great location, good views, good breakfast, comfy bed, quiet. Couldn't have asked for more for the value and proximity to the wedding and to Richmond centre.

Had a terrible experience at this hotel. Despite the fact that I had a full paid voucher (they charged me long before I arrive), they took my Credit card as a security deposit. Upon checking out, I paid a stupid price of GBP11.10 for 2 bottles of water (never the less I have ordered them). BUT I have then discovered another charge, AFTER I left for the amount of GBP25.50. That was a FRAUD transaction and I am wondering of the reason. I am a VERY regular traveler, at least 1-2 times a month I am out of my country and that was the VERY first time I had a charge AFTER I checked out. The case has been reported to the bank as well to booking.com (my reservation was through them) and I am waiting now to see how it goes. What if I haven't seen the charge? Easy money? That is cheating, clear, pure cheating.

Room Tip: Just avoid the hotel. Choosing a room is not the issue. Cheating is.

Dear Guest,

We do NOT cheat our customers and strongly refute your allegation. I am unsure as to why you are so surprised by the additional charge as an email was sent to you and to the Hotel by the customer services department of booking.com who you originally paid for your reservation detailing the following error on your original payment, it read as follows:-

"We are writing to you regarding your reservation***** at The Richmond Hill Hotel, check-in date ******, and check-out date ******.

We have looked at your reservation and notice that their is an issue with the rate on the confirmation. For some unknown reason it has only processed the breakfast for 1 guest.
Your reservation should be as follows:
Room Reservation - £xxx.xx
Breakfast @ £xx.xx per person - £xx
Parking - £xx
Total £xxxxxx
On your confirmation it reads £xxx.xx, should you require the additional parking and breakfast you will be required to pay and additional £25.50 upon arrival.
Please feel free to contact us with any additional questions."

This was discussed with you on arrival and a copy of the email received at the Hotel shown to you, as you availed yourself of these services the charges were applied to your bill.

You had as stated paid in advance for your stay with us via Booking.com however it is common practice in most Hotels to take a pre authorization upon check in for a token sum to allow incidentals to be charged to the room, i.e drinks or dinner. If not used this amount is released back to the customer as was the case after you had paid for you water charged to your room bill.

Receiving such an aggressive and untrue review is really disappointing for the Hotel and damages our reputation. We are disappointed you felt the need to post without first questioning us or booking.com directly.

Yours sincerely

Diane

Just spent two nights at the Richmond Hill Hotel and feel compelled to comment. I travel frequently but it's rare for me to feel compelled to comment on my experience. From the time I arrived at the hotel I felt that the staff cared! Good check in, lovely room and the restaurant was excellent. In particular the Maitre'D was exceptional, that said every member of staff I encountered was excellent. Would definitely return.

I booked two nights in a junior suite for July 17 & 18 as I was getting married near by. I also had family and friends book rooms at the hotel as well. While the area is stunning based on the experience we had I would certainly not recommend the hotel. When I checked in on the 17th I was informed there was a school prom taking place and it could be a little noisy. As this was the night before my wedding my maid of honour and I popped out for a bite to eat & returned to the hotel around 9:30 to have a relaxing night in before the big day. When we got back to the room the walls were vibrating. A little noisy was a total understatement - it felt like we were on the dance floor! Certainly not what you would expect when paying £300/night! The day of the wedding we got ready in the room, ordering room service and having people pop in and out throughout the morning. When we left for the ceremony we phoned the from desk to just double check that the room would be made up before my husband and I were to return later that evening - we were assured this wouldn't be an issue. When we returned to the room shortly before 1am we found that the room hadn't been made up and that all of the dishes from the room service that was ordered during the day were still there. Needless to say not what anyone wants to find on their wedding night! Overall a very disappointing experience for what is meant to be a wonderful celebration.

Dear Kristine,

I am sincerely sorry to see how badly we let you down during your stay with us prior to your wedding. I am disappointed that we not only allocated you a room above the function noise, but then did not follow through on your requests for a refreshed room the following day.

I can assure you that this is not indicative of our usual standards of service. I will investigate how this happened to ensure we try to avoid such poor service in the future.

I would very much like the opportunity to restore your faith in the service we provide at the Hotel. I have contacted you directly to look at an opportunity to do this.

I look forward to hearing from you,

kind regards

Diane

I booked a last minute treat at www.lastminute.com for a night away in London, up the steepest hill in London, albeit a lovely spot, I found the hotel, the room was on the ground floor overlooking a car park. Not ideal. And it was tiny. Shabby parts of the room and weirdly the tv wasn't mounted in front of the bed but stuck on a corner so you had to crane your neck. The room was boiling and when I turned on the air con it was instantly freezing and made weird noises. The bathroom door was very scruffy and there was workmen drilling in the hall with no explanation. When I tried to order room service the line was engaged, they eventually rang me back but the food was lack lustre and if I had known the area better I wouldn't have eaten it, I am a vegetarian and the choice was meagre. There was no mini bar in the room either. A ridiculous price for a continental breakfast had me checking out at 9.30 to go search for breakfast in nearby Richmond. There was no trims, no customer service or attention to detail. I booked a massage which is oddly in a separate building at the back of the hotel and that was the best part about my so called treat. I would never stay here again and after the last few www.lastminute.com bookings I will never use their site again, a bargain is not a bargain if you pay over 100 pounds a night to sleep in a tiny room looking onto a carpark, my bedroom at home is nicer. I don't know why I bothered.

Dear G,

I am sorry to read that you did not enjoy your stay with us at Richmond Hill Hotel. The Hotel is situated on top of Richmond Hill, which affords us fantastic views and an easy walk back down but can be quite tiring for those not expecting it.

I am unsure as to what room type you had reserved through Last-minute or whether they had noted it was for a special occasion, however it feels you have a standard double room during your time with us. The TV's in these rooms are sometimes situated in the corner and we chose to put them on a swivel arm so they did not get in the way of guests navigating the room. It should have moved around to afford you the ability to watch from your bed without craning your neck. When I have established which room you were in I will investigate this and your comments about the bathroom door. It is a shame that you had not asked reception to move your room if you had been unhappy. Where possible the team always try to find an alternative if the guest expresses disappointment, I cannot find a record on our reception or duty managers log to note this.

We do have very effective air conditioning in each room, we do not leave it on during the time our guests are not in the room as this conserves energy and due to the fact it works very quickly do not feel this is necessary. Unfortunately these systems do make a slight hum and depending on the setting can make a noise when the fans move up and down. I am sorry you found this unsettling.

The vegetarian selection available at the Hotel is both on the specials menu changed weekly and on the brasserie menu. The restaurant team and kitchen brigade would have been happy to take a special request if this had not meet your requirements or if you had called to let us know that you were not happy with the dish supplied.

I am delighted that Rachel and her team at the Cedars Spa did provide a highlight. Please contact me directly if you ever feel like a break away, and we will ensure we find a suitable bedroom and delicious vegetarian meal.

Thank you for taking the time to bring your feedback to our attention, it always helps us focus on areas that are not quite right, to ensure we do better in the future.

Kind regards

Diane

This hotel is superb. We stayed for a wedding in Richmond Park and it was perfect in every way. We were able to check into our room at midday which was great as we had a wedding at 1.30pm.

The bedroom was really spacious and well decorated with a lovely clean bathroom and the air con was a dream in the recent hot weather. We also had a little balcony which was very pleasant.

The hotel is located a 2 minute walk from Richmond Park and about 15-20 minutes from the centre of Richmond and it's downhill all the way (which obviously means it's uphill on the way back!).

Food in the bar was delicious and for standard hotel prices. We had breakfast included but otherwise it was £12 per person so again pretty standard and the selection and quality of food on offer was excellent - I'm always impressed with Nutella at hotels!! We booked on a deal which included a cream tea and a glass of bubbly which we were able to enjoy on the following day, despite having already checked out, and again it was exceptional.

I really can't recommend this hotel enough.

We booked this hotel back in December 2013. - I was unsure which type of room to book I was looking at junior suite or luxury room - but was told by reception not to book those rooms as they were over their function room and to book an exec. double which I did having been told it was in the quieter part of the hotel. We arrived at our room - I must say a little tired looking - so we looked at 2 other rooms but decided to stay put. The breakfasts were lovely along with the staff in the restaurants. We booked for 2 nights the first night we had dinner included we were the only ones in the restaurant so we left and walked into Richmond. Saturday evening arriving back to our room around 11.15, only to have a disco practically in our room - it was so loud I cannot tell you, only book this hotel if they can guarantee a quiet room.

Room Tip: Check about any functions going on - if this bothers you ask for a quiet room.

Dear Callie,

Thank you for your review of your time spent with us at Richmond Hill Hotel. I am really saddened to read you were disturbed by the noise from the function, we try extremely hard to allocate rooms of guests not attending functions away from these event. I am sorry we did not achieve this for your time spent with us.

Thank you for taking time to still point out the positives of your stay, such as breakfast and the service team. I do hope you return to the Hotel again and we can make sure we reserve a room in a quieter area for you.

Kind regards
