“Winter weekend at The Petersham Hotel”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

We stayed in The Petersham Hotel for two nights over the weekend. The hotel is very beautiful, it is a small hotel that still manages to be quite grand.

Check-in was swift and the staff we're very polite. We had a woodland view room at the back, we would have liked a river view room but the price difference was too much. The room was smaller than anticipated but very clean and nicely decorated. The bed itself was not the most comfortable and we both agreed that we have definitely slept in better, also the room was very warm- we managed to take the radiator cover off to turn it off and even at that the heat was a lot to take in the middle of the night. The bathroom is comfortable and spotless. If you are staying for a longer period of time try request a room with some storage (if possible) as there was little to none in our room.

In our short stay our room door was knocked on by housekeeping twice needlessly. After breakfast on our first day we went back up to our room to see it was already cleaned, we had left the ready to be cleaned sign on the door handle, but then an hour later our door was knocked on. Then the following morning at 9.30 our door was knocked on by housekeeping again. Bare in mind checkout is not till 11.00, so although a very small gripe, it was a little annoying, as then it felt as though someone might just walk in.

We loved the restaurant for our evening meal. The set menu, although limited, is good value and we both found dishes on it we really enjoyed. The food was portioned well and very tasty. We were really well looked after and it felt like a special experience rather than going to just any restaurant.

Breakfast was not great, we both got the Full English and it was OK, it was quite small and just not much to it. The breakfast menu was quite limited too. Again though, the service and surroundings were lovely, with a beautiful view of the river and countryside.

The hotel was very quiet, no music or liveliness, but coming from the city and looking to relax, we appreciated this.

The location is a short walk from Richmond Town or a very short bus (3mins). It was nice not to be right in the centre. The hotel is just across the road from the river too, which is lovely for a nice walk.

Check-out was smooth and again the staff we're extremely friendly.

Room Tip: Very warm rooms, try address this as soon as you enter your room.

I like this hotel but the food in the restaurant was pretty awful. I ordered simply as I feel less can go wrong. To start I had smoked salmon and it arrived, a 4 inch square with a pile of rocket on top of it. So much you could hardly see the smoked salmon. Our host had the same and embarrassingly I complained. Our plates were whipped away and more salmon was added with the rocket thrown back on top. A pile of food that was not well presented. My main course was a rib eye steak which I'd ordered medium rare. It arrived over cooked but I did not complain this time as I didn't want to embarrass our host further. The steak did have good flavour. My husbands meal was no better. It seems that they cannot serve up something without fiddling with it which I hate. His veal escalope arrived looking a mess with a mishmash of flavours. We decided to give the puddings a miss. This hotel is in a wonderful location and judging by the cars in the car park had quite a few people staying but the restaurant was very empty, possibly 4 tables. If they are going to put smoked salmon and potted shrimps on the menu they need to do it properly. Put in a good chef and you'd have a great place but as it is it is hardly worth the 2*'s I've given it.

Two day stay over weekend. Hotel not too busy. Located nicely between Richmond and Kingston. Impressive building. Staff very top draw attentive but a shade too over bearing! Several meals all well prepared and beautifully presented. Prices acceptable although we were off budget as special purpose to our visit. Car parking no issue.

Offered upgrade to River for one night of the two. Not really on to switch rooms so useless suggestion. Not given reason why one night more puzzling as empty hotel! For a small extra fee we could have purchased. Felt little dismissed by attitude at check in although all conducted pleasantly but something was lacking

Room frankly rather smaller thank anticipated overlooking woodland at rear. Virtually no hanging or storage space making room even more cramped, they seem to expect guests to be one nighters! Bed fine. Bathroom modern but the design clumsy and not customer orientated, as with many revamps do the designers or any staff member actually try the shower or loo to see if the ergonomics works! Here it does not as limbo dancer posture to use shower! Heating too powerfully and unable to regulate radiators! Feeling like a lobster middle of night managed to remove front piece of radiator cover and turn down but still needed windows wide open to get to normal! Not four star here!

Beautiful staircase to upper floors. Impressive. Slight downside so rather drunk guests in lower lounge noise carried upwards.

All said really enjoyed our stay but next time room at front towards the river! Staff try to be slightly less formal and stiff!

Room Tip: Back area peaceful but try for front and river

Having been here for breakfast, lunch, dinner and afternoon tea regularly for years when living locally, now it's our home from home living abroad. The rooms are traditional and the restaurant consistently to be excellent, on top of it all, the most amazing view of the river Thames, simply the best!

Arriving at The Petersham you get a feeling that you've arrived at somewhere great. The external impression is great and first impressions as you walk in are good.
There's lots of good staff looking after you - actually probably too many at breakfast as every part seems to be delivered by a different person!
The room we had, 103, is fine. It looks over the car park and is tucked away in a quiet corner. It's small and the bathroom needs a refresh as areas of the paint are tired.
Like all London hotels they charge far too much for drinks - £6.50 for a bottle of beer - so drink elsewhere!

Short walk to Richmond town centre so very good location.

Wow! We stayed in the honeymoon suite on our wedding night and this hotel was just beautiful. It overlooks Petersham meadows and the Thames, surely one of the most beautiful views in England. I live locally and have eaten in the restaurant before, the waiting staff and food are excellent and the breakfast was very good indeed.
When we got back from our wedding the management had left a bottle of champagne and macarons in the room which we ate on the balcony chatting over the wedding.
