“More shabby - less chic”
Reviewed 25 July 2006

I booked on behalf of a guest for one night. We also organised dinner for four people the same night.

First impressions are pretty poor - parked my car at the side of the hotel next to an overflowing dustbin that absolutely stunk. Inside the hotel - evidence of neglect is pretty much everywhere - peeling paint and frayed carpets on the ground floor. Normally i'm pretty relaxed when it comes to hotels - however, at £250 per night, this was simply not good enough.

Dinner was like a scene out of the keystone cops - whilst the waitress was very friendly, her support team seemed like they had never been inside a restaurant before - such was the poor quality of service. We waited over an hour for our starters and when hte main dish came - it was cold. The food however, was pretty good when it eventually arrived.

I normally book guests in at the Petersham along the river - cheaper rooms and mch more palatial with faultess service and fantastic food.

The hotel was everything you could want. The common rooms were great, each bedroom different and very well appointed, and the staff just wonderful. The location was one of the best parts. Right on the Thames, gardens leading to a foot path, and walking close to all of the great restaurants and shops. Also easy walking distance to the Tube or train station, yet far enough out of London as to feel you are away from the city. Very highly recommended

Having read the previous reviews we have to say that we were very disappointed upon arrival. Car parking is VERY limited and you have to leave keys at Reception in order for them to move to let other guests in/out onto a very busy main road.

Reception staff and environment was very friendly and check in quick and allowed us in slightly early. Communal areas were neat and recently refurbished in a very tasteful contemporary manner. Views of the Thames were gorgeous and the gardens well maintained.

As this was our 1st Wedding Anniversary we had treated ourselves to 1 of their Four Poster Rooms. The room itself was ok with a nice view of the river. It didn't feel clean and decor (compared to the extremely neat and stylish downstairs rooms) was very shabby and in need of re decoration! However, the bathroom was hideous! It was like a relic from a 1970s flat with a very poor example of a "power shower", worn and dirty tiles and accessories literally hanging off the walls. The bathroom also overlooked the busy main road (which some rooms apparently do too!) and with traditional wooden single glazed windows you can imagine the noise. The other EXTREMELY disappointing feature of our room was the bed, after a 2 night stay we both left with incredibly bad backs, aches and pains and also a little grumpy from lack of sleep from such a soft mattress (although when highlighted to the reception staff upon check out she did promise a discount and special mattress/room if we decide to visit again!).

We ate in their 1 Rosette dining room for our anniversary meal which was very nice and again staff extremely helpful and welcoming.

There are so many neat things about this hotel. It is right on the river, so the location is delightful. You can wander about Richmond and have a perfectly pleasant time, or take the tube in to inner London and enjoy the city. It is also near Kew Gardens. The rooms vary a great deal in size and style, but the common spaces are simultaneously grand and comfortable. The staff has the feeling of a family and makes you feel at home. This is one of my favorite places to stay in London.

Fantastic hotel! We found this wonderful little hotel by chance and had one of our best hotel experiences in Britain. The hotel garden is right on the bank of the Thames and our room opened onto the garden. The room was very spacious, a sort of a mini-suite with a huge ensuite bathroom and very well furnished and perfect for our family of 4. The price was a bargain compared to other hotels we saw in the area. The staff was a delight. They were very helpful and attentive and made us feel right at home. The breakfast was nothing short of excellent, with a large buffet of cereals, fruit, juices and so on, followed by a sumptuous choice of hot breakfast entrees. The restaurant is also a gourmet dinner spot. Unfortunately we did not eat dinner there, but if breakfast is anything to go by, then it is probably spectacular. The bar, garden and patio are extremely nice. The bar is the old ballroom of the Victorian mansion which forms the main part of the hotel and is hung with tapestries and furnished with club chairs and sofas. The garden is landscaped beautifully and has teak tables and chairs where you can sit for a cocktail and watch the river traffic go by. Just out the garden gate you can walk along the Thames towpath and you can catch a river boat to London or Hampton Court a couple of hundred yards away. We loved this hotel and give it our highest recommendation.
