“Dirty Rooms with constant noise from fans above kitchen”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2013

This establishment should be avoided at all costs the rooms and corridors are dusty, dingy and cobweb strewn curtains, whilst the bathrooms and toilets could only be described as extremely dirty with filth generously spread around the toilets and shower areas mould everywhere. We complained to the cleaner who told us that the rooms had workmen staying prior to our visit how this is relevant we did not understand.
This until recently was a good value B&B and whilst it was always best described as different having no TV it did offer clean rooms that were quite if not modern, the public bar used to be value for money offering non branded beers and lagers at cheap prices .
They still offer non branded product but it is cheaper else where for the real thing, the food could best be described as average pub food, the Sunday Carvery being perhaps slightly better, but nowhere near as good as previous visits.
All in all this establishment has gone down hill in terms of standards and pricing.
We will not be returning anytime soon but will be looking for alternative London accomodation

Room Tip: anywhere away from noise

We are fairly local to this place and after deciding to go for a carvery we almost chose another on the basis of recent reviews. I'm glad we didn't. The carvery was excellent with a choice of beef, pork or turkey (or a slice of each). The cauliflower cheese was particularly spectacular but all of the veg were cooked just right. The staff were all helpful and the Sam Smiths Old Brewery bitter was well looked after, my partner was surprised at the quantity of wine in her glass.

A nice touch in my opinion is that iPads and laptops and the like are banned from the eating area (there is free wifi though if you want to browse the internet from another part of the bar. The place itself has good decor and the view out over the Thames is very good. I would definitely recommend the Rose of York and we shall be revisiting soon.

On a seperate note, if you decide to take a walk down the river afterwards, there are no pubs on the south bank until you get to Teddington 2.5 miles away, so walk along the north bank and take a look at Marble Hill hall, then visit some of the very good Twickenham riverside pubs.

I have been visiting this pub on an occasional basis for 20 years or so on my day trips to London from Hertfordshire and most recently from Sheffield. I haven't ever stayed overnight here, regarding it more as a cosy and welcoming traditional country-style pub with simple, nicely cooked and good value food.

I hadn't visited for over a year, but I certainly wasn't dissappointed on this occasion. Whilst the pub may appear a bit old fashioned to some, targeted more at the passing traveller on the busy main road outside rather than the "Richmond riverside smart set', it very successfully avoids being a souless gastropub and is still definately a welcoming traditional ale house with good beer and B & B accommodation.

Whilst it is a shame the owners Samuel Smith brewery don't push their excellent bottled beers in draft form, the bar staff served a very well kept pint of Old Brewery bitter.

We both ordered gammon, egg, chips and peas which was absolutely delicious. For only £8.50 the 10 oz gammon steak was very thick and juicy and perfectly cooked. I'm glad the pub has not followed the recent trend towards char grilling which in my opinion usually results in overcooked and dry meat. The egg was poached with slightly runny yolk, just how we like it. Even the peas had more flavour than is usually expected.

We visited on a cold but sunny day, but perhaps the pubs heating was a bit overpowering. However, i really like the slightly dim interior which is a large L shape wood panelled bar and there are nice views of the surrounding riverside meadows or pub gardens wherever one sits. I'm guessing the pub may have been a farmstead ,many years ago.

Will be back!!

We today visited the Rose of York Hotel carvery at Richmond for Sunday lunch,to say how much this previously value for money pub hotel has changed would be hard to explain,
We have visited numerous times in the past always leaving well satisfied with this thames side venue
What has changed with the new management would hard to define, the food was cold both under and overcooked and pretty dismal compared to our previous visits, the staff look similar but lack any kind of enthusiasm even when dealing with complaints of which there were plenty, the families on the adjacent tables. enduring a similar experience.

The room was dirty by third world standards, the toilet condition is best not described, when we complained to the cleaner he said he would take care of everything however upon our return whilst some effort had been made the room remained dusty and,the shower and toilet filthy as were the public areas, his explanation being workman had stayed previously and that the place was under new management!
The breakfast could best be described as extremely poor whilst the area from which it was served was of the same quality as the room.
Needless to say we left bitterly disappointed,we have stayed under the old regime and whilst not wonderful it was clean and pleasant if a little quirky with an excellent breakfast.
We have also written to the hotel in an attempt to get our money back, we are awaiting there reply
This is our first review and has been generated only by the slovenly attitude of staff at this once adequate place to stay when visiting family in richmond upon thames.

Room Tip: Good luck find a clean one

Pleasant little hotel, good bar with a friendly atmosphere. The room was very small, no television but free wifi. Free parking.
Location is great, walking distance to the centre of Richmond with plenty of good restaurants and cafes along the way.
Bed was comfortable, breakfast generous and hot. Decent coffee too.
Evening meal not so good - soggy broccoli and strange-tasting gravy. Partner was happy with the sausages and mash.
Cleanliness was a letdown - the new-looking carpets along the corridors were grey with dust at the edges, the floor in our room hadn't been cleaned before we went in and the shower was dirty.

We recently stayed at the rose of York for the weekend. The room was lovely, very spacious and it's set in a perfect location along the river. The tube station is only 10 minutes walk away and Richmond has lots of shops and restaurants.

We had breakfast in the hotel which was cooked to perfection and piping hot. The landlord and landlady are extremely friendly and are always on hand to help.

Thank you so much for a fabulous weekend, we will definitely be back!
