“Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

We booked a 2.30pm slot for Sunday Lunch and although they were very busy with a large group, the service and the food was faultless, we will certainly be back for more. The selection of traditional ales was good too.

I was a part of a group of 4 riders on a 3 day Freerein Horse Riding Holiday. We were booked into the Roast Ox for our first night. As our holiday was at the end of October and was in a mountainous area of Wales, we were hoping for a friendly warm pub with good facilities and a nice room. We got it with the Roast Ox. An extremely friendly welcome, a gorgeous fire in the bar, a lovely traditional pub with friendly locals and great seating.
Our main evening meal was exceptionally well cooked, of hearty proportions and great value. Damn that guy can cook.....
After a few well earned beers, we retired to the rooms. Warm, clean, comfortable beds, great showers........... Very pleased.
The following morning we were greated by an extremely friendly and accomodating chef whom made us feel extremely welcome. He took great care in ensuring that we got the food that we wanted how we wanted it. Two of our group were vegetarians and their breakfasts were not a compromise.
All told we were extremely happy with every part of our Roast Ox experience..... Even down to Sid, the Pub Cat....... But don't wake him if he's sleeping......... ;0)

We booked via LateRooms.com the afternoon of our stay and were concerned when we eventually arrived via a long diversion at the Inn that they had no idea that a booking had been made with them ! We had booked a double room but were offered a twin which was the only room available to us, the room was acceptable although very small and I felt a little overpriced. We did however have a good pub meal and a very pleasant evening in the bar where the staff and landlord were very hospitable.
Despite the small beds and a few lively lads in the bar below we had a good nights sleep and an excellent breakfast before heading off to nearby Hay on Wye. I would stay again but would book by phone beforehand and ask for a reduced rate for the room which I would expect to pay no more than about £60 to £70 in their current condition. NICE people though !

Room Tip: The double might be better than the twin room !?

Stayed here with my friend on a horse riding weekend. Great atmosphere great food and the rooms were clean and we had tea and coffee making facilities . The breakfast was lovely and we had more than enough to eat. Would definitely recommend this inn.

The Roast Ox Inn, Painscastle, Powys. What an excellent establishment. My wife and I stayed two nights here on August 21st & 22nd,to attend a funeral of a Naval Officer from the village who I had served with, along with three other shipmates. The welcome was first class and the rooms and food excellent. The banter with the locals excellent. A word of warning - watch out for the gorgeous ships cat who likes to sit on the bar and stick his paws in your drinks!!
Will go again at earliest opportunity.

Went to the Roast Ox today on a recommendation and didn't fail to deliver. There was 2 of us and our dog and we booked 2 hours beforehand with a polite gentleman. The ale is excellent Doombar, not local, but hey, who cares when its this good. We ordered roast beef and was presented with a big plate of meat, potatoes and Yorkshire pudding and thought it was weird to have no veg but tucked in anyway. To our pleasant surprise a bowl of cheesy leeks, bowl of veg and some extra gravy arrived. The quantity and quality was excellent and didnt have to pay until the end of the meal. Overall and excellent place to eat Sunday Lunch and felt looked after and comfortable.

We stayed here over the weekend of the 16/17th Aug 2013. 1 Double room and 1 Twin.. very nice! Clean, comfy and had everything we needed. We slept sooooo well! Beside breakfast we had 2 evening meals, they were delicious - Tony is some chef! We were not able to stay for Sunday Lunch but we had heard it is just as tasty as the meals we had eaten. Jason is welcoming helpful and good company - our thanks to all at the Roast Ox for a lovely, pleasant, stress free and thoroughly enjoyable weekend! Highly recommended for B&B, meals or just a few drinks with a relaxing atmosphere! Well done and thanks again....
