A quiet little country pub full of character! A few friends and I stayed at the roast ox and were extremely pleased at the service we received. The room was clean and tidy and the beds were really comfy. We received great service in the morning when having our breakfast, the staff couldn't be more helpful.
I throughly enjoyed my stay and hopefully will return in the near future.

Out of the way but well worth going to. Excellent atmosphere, really good food and very friendly. It is obviously very popular and there is a good reason for that. Service was polite and quick despite it being full. Will go back there for sure.

We had a very warm welcome after being soaked in the rain whilst riding to the pub. The horses were hitched conveniently outside and rested whilst we enjoyed a couple fo glasses of wine and a bowl of soup and fabulous mixed meet PLoughmans.
Excellent service.

Painscastle is a different place since Tony and his team took over The Roast Ox a couple of years ago. Tony makes sure you are well fed from the kitchen, Jason ensures you are well watered in the bar and Sydney the cat makes sure you are well mannered at all times.
The food is excellent and servings are very generous and Tony's Pecan Pie still rates as our number one dessert. This team really knows what customer service is about and no matter how busy they are, they are always very accommodating. Dogs are welcomed (although not by Sydney) and horses are catered for with a water trough making this pub the perfect stop over for lunch after a Sunday stroll or ride in the Welsh hills.

Room Tip: I personally have never stayed in the rooms but have spoken to many of their guests over the years a...

Stayed overnight Friday night (18th April 2014). First night of our Freereign riding holiday. What a great place to stay. We had a great welcome from Jason who was the perfect host (bit of a lad too). The rooms were great, food was exceptional and a lovely pint of Doombar. The breakfast the following morning was as good as the night before. What more could be asked for. We popped in for a hot drink on the way back on Sunday. The weather had taken a turn for the worst. The pub was full with people having Sunday lunch, however this didn't stop Jason from giving us another great reception and served us immediately. I wishI lived closer it would be my local. You lucky devils in Painscastle!!!!
