“totally nothing like a 4 star hotel!!!”
Reviewed 25 June 2010

Stayed for 1 night...which was absolutely long enough!!! Horrid experience. No one there on arrival, just a key with a piece of paper telling us which room we were in.Our room was basic and up 2 flights of stairs, the second of which was rather difficult to negotiate with bags.No shampoo or shower gel, just a small bar of soap. No tv in the room which we had been aware of ,however there was no tv anywhere in the hotel (apparently it was hotel policy so that the guests would mix)which was annoying as I wanted to watch Wimbledon and didnt feel like mixing!! Breakfast was a communal affair, sharing a table with 6 others. When I said we would prefer to sit by ourselves we were told no! Breakfast...well, what can I say??? I ordered poached eggs and bacon...I was given I egg and I rasher of bacon!! My husband had asked for hashbrowns and scrambled eggs..and yes. you guessed it ....one hashbrown and a spoon full of egg!!! We wanted to play croquet, as the hotel advertised a croquet lawn. After about 1/2 hour a croquet set was produced and we set up the hoops, however I guess the staff didnt realise that a croquet lawn that is not mowed /rolled is a not really a croquet lawn, more a patch of bumpy overgrown grass. The views however were stunning and the pool was very good, but the overall feel was that of a glorified hostel and not a four star hotel.

This hotel was a great place for a weekend stay. We used it as a base for going up Ben Nevis and the whole experience was a pleasure. Our rooms were very clean and comfortable and the staff were quick and efficient. We would certainly recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to be near Fort William but in a quiet location

This used to be the Bishop's manse for the Western Highlands and he DID choose a lovely spot near Glencoe. The lawn sweeps down to Loch Leven and looks across to the mountains. Downstairs is much as it used to be with fireplace, wide staircase and comfortable lounge area (with bar and a large selection of whisky - of course!). The upper floors have been converted into much smaller bedrooms, most en suite. A new wing contains more modern bedrooms and a pool. Food is excellent - a hearty Scottish breakfast and rather elegant dinners. Sack lunches only.

HF Holidays operates this as a base for their walking holidays, usually seven day programs. These include everything from so called "easy" walks to climbing Mt. Nevis - Britain's higest mountain. (Americans should be aware that British "walking" is our hiking and even the "easy" walks are strenious, all day, 6-11 mile affairs - and Scotland is ALWAYS cold and often wet. Long underwear, waterproofs and trekking poles are musts.) Scenery is spectacular. The daily group hikes, good food and evening programs promote a feeling of comradship among the groups and friendships so formed can last for years. Most attendees are English with a sprinking of other nationalities - even an occasional Scot!

Alltshellach also offers some other programs, plein air painting, garden tours, and "rover" tours which do not require so much strenious climbing but - WARNING - these are subject to last minute cancellations - inconvenient when you have booked flights and other accommodations from overseas. Except for this problem, Alltshellach and HF Holidays can be recommended without reservation for those who want an active outdoor holiday.

Prices are inclusive and remarkable reasonable for the accomodations, food, guided walks and evening programs (HF Holidays is a operative and guides are volunteers!).

B&B accomodations are also available but our feeling was that those guests felt a little "left out" as indeed they were.
