We were staying at the Poggio Cavallo agriturismo, which has rooms and apartments for rent on the same estate as the restaurant (the accommodation was great, pleasant rooms opening straight out onto an olive grove, with a beautiful pool amidst the olive trees and a plentiful breakfast awaiting guests in the morning).
In order to avoid driving around the countryside after dinner (the wine of Maremma is so good you don't want to have to worry about how much you've had to drink...) we opted to have dinner at Poggio Cavallo's restaurant.
The restaurant is in a beautifully restored stone stable and makes for a great setting; in the summer months tables are put outside on the patio or lawn and the scenery is spectacular.
But the best thing of all is the food; we opted for the fixed price menu (with a choice of dishes), and for 25 Euro a head we were treated to a feast. An assortment of delicious homemade appetisers and local hams, followed by mouthwatering first-course pasta dishes, a delicious steak served with choice of side orders, homemade cake for dessert AND a bottle of the house wine (a Montecucco red, very good). Plus of course water, coffees and liqueurs till we could take no more. I would add that we live in Italy, and my husband is Italian: he knows his food and he has very impressed.
Needless to say we went back the second night as well and really enjoyed the pleasant welcome and another great meal. We will be going again, and next time we'll try the fish, apparently a bit of a speciality of the chef's (on the second evening the table of local people next to us came especially for the fish and it looked excellent).
Couldn't fault it; it was our tenth wedding anniversary and we were so pleased we chose Poggio Cavallo to celebrate, it was truly special.
