This is a lovingly-converted mill in a wonderful French (small) town on the edge of the high Pyrenees. We stayed when the weather was still chilly, but sunny, and there was a plentiful supply of wood to fuel the stove in the family dining room and keep the place warm. There was of course background heating too, and the whole apartment was very cosy. The kitchen was very well equipped and everything worked well - the charming owners only a phone call away. The town itself provided a wonderful French experience with traditional butchers and bakers making self catering a breeze. Fabulous walks on the doorstep and a short drive away. Historic towns and the coast an easy day trip. Highly recommended!
Arudy is located about 20 minutes' drive south of Pau, France where Henri IV was born -- and a palace well worth visiting. Arudy is a charming almost medieval/Renaissance town with a lovely town hall, church, museum, local shops, including bakeries and specifically the old flour mill, locataed on rue du moulin, dating back several centuries, where local townspeople used to launder their clothes in the canal leading to under the main floor if the mill to turn its four paddle wheels. In the 19th c. people even washed lambskin in the canal leading to the flour mill until such time as townspeople objected to the smell. Arudy is located in the Ossau Valley about a half-hour drive from the French/Spanish pyrennees where one can enjoy a breathtaking ride, first by gondola, then by small train for a 50-minute ride abreast steep, beautiful mountain slopes. Another outing is about the same distance going East, to les Grottes de Betharram not far from Lourdes. Indeed the Gite du Moulin à Arudy is very well equiped with travel information in both languages for mountain trekking and all forms of outdoor excursions by foot or by boat. As for the Gite du Moulin, it is absolutely divine! The kitchen is well equiped; the dining area is charming, complete with fireplace, as is the living/den area near the three bedrooms and a second bathroom just off a lovely balcony. Furnished to provide any visitor a `feel at home` comfortable and most attractive decor. Absolutely an extraordinary experience ... stayed three nights and could have easily stayed a week!
We had a lovely family stay in this very authentic gite. It was everything we needed: fresh air of the mountain, peacefulness and plenty of outdoor activity possibilities !
I would definitely recommand this place !
