“A wonderful surprise”
Reviewed 6 March 2011

We came across the watergarden while wandering around Coromandel. Mrs. Sank kindly showed us the cottage which we immediately booked for one night but now wish it had been longer. Such a marvelous hidden treasure about 6km off the main road between Thames and Coromandel town - if we had known about it, we would never have bothered with the latter.
So we wound our way back to Rapaura for the night and had a magical stay in the cozy cottage during a torential downpour. We had taken our own food in and therefore could just sit back and enjoy the rain, peace and quiet, and solitude. fortunately today we had a lovely clearing spell and could enjoy the gardens. Absolutely stunning - how lucky the Sank family is to live here.
Koru - the cafe is a delight and staffed by Sacha - chef extraordinaire. Excellent baked goods and coffee and you just don't want to leave.
When we come back to NZ, this will be the first place we will head...
You come away totally refreshed and ready to face the world...

We stayed one night in the Boutique Lodge on our honeymoon trip and this was the most unique experience.
The house is set in the very beautiful Rapaura Watergardens and after the park closes at 5p.m. you are there all by yourself and you can wander around, marvel at the beauty of nature and even go for a swim in the pond of the waterfall...but in November the water was just too cold, so we skipped that. :-)
The house itself is an architectural gem fully made from wood which has such a special charm. It has many balconies and after dark it is so romatic to just stand there, watch the stars and listen to the sounds of nature.
Both Sally and Sacha were very friendly and helpful during our stay.
We can recommend this place to everyone who is looking for a special place to stay!!

We rented the cottage at Rapaura Water Gardens for the last two nights of our recent visit to New Zealand. After a month of B&Bs, it was a lovely change to have a whole cottage to ourselves with a living room to relax in and our first bath in that time too.

Rapaura Water Gardens are a 15 minute drive north of Thames on the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. They are owned by a very nice lady called Sally who rents out two self-catered properties in the grounds of the Water Gardens. She also runs the nearby Koru cafe/gift shop with her son.

We were really pleased we rented the cottage which was definitely worth $165 per night. The living room was nicely furnished with CD player and CDs, books, ornaments, pictures etc and, joy of joys, a comfortable settee to relax on - very appreciated after the month of B&Bs. No TV but that didn't matter a bit especially with NZ TV not being the greatest! Comfortable and cosy bedroom. Shower room /WC and a separate bathroom which were perfectly adequate but could do with being updated - however this was my only (minor) criticism of the cottage. Lots of lovely touches everywhere. Free Rapaura Water Gardens slippers for example. Loved the wood burning stove which really warmed the cottage up during the slightly chilly early autumn evenings.

Well equipped kitchen - only thing I couldn't find was a cheese grater. Very generous amount of provisions left for our DIY breakfasts. Eight eggs and a whole loaf of bread, plus muesli, butter, preserves, fresh coffee, selection of teas, milk, fruit juice, yoghurts. Far too much for two people for two breakfasts!

So nice to be staying in such a peaceful and beautiful place. The bush walk to the water falls and the lily pond were absolutely lovely, especially in the evening, and the water gardens opposite the cottage were very well done. Lots of little signs with inspiring words on them - definitely "a place to revitalize the senses".

On reading the visitor's book, I saw that my son's favourite primary school teacher from Essex/UK had stayed there four years ago - small world!

Would have no hesitation in recommending this as a wonderful place to visit.

Wish we'd had longer than 2 days here, it is a very special place. Wonderful food in the cafe too. The cottage had so many personal touches and we felt privileged. Don't come here if you are a 3 star hotel person, but if you love nature it is a treat.

We really thought this was an amazing place. The gardens are beautiful, loved the waterfall where we went swimming!

Koru, the cafe/restaurant, had fantastic homemade cakes, try the chocolate or the cheese cake with excellent organic teas!

I would recommend Rapaura to anybody who is looking for a special relaxing place to stay! We are definetly going back! :-)

  • Liked — The gardens are beautiful and peaceful - the food was amazing - and we were treated as part of the family!
