Owner description: The Rowlinson family have lived at Abbeywood since 1987, during which time they have made many improvements and additions to the gardens. The year starts in February with many varieties of Galanthus in Jane's Garden, followed by other Spring favourites, Erythroniums and Trilliums, to name but a few of her rare plants. The Main Garden is divided into separate areas. The formal layout gives way to naturalistic planting within. Early May starts with Tulips followed by Alliums and Camassia. Seasonal interest continues until around mid September - weather depending. The Christopher Lloyd inspired Exotic Garden, designed around the remnants of the old vegetable garden, is filled with Dahlias, Cannas, Banana and other tender perennials. These continue until the first frosts. The Young Arboretum is planted with rare evergreen and deciduous trees for year round interest. A 2km, wildlife walk incorporates the existing and new woodland on the 45 acre grounds.

Beautiful gardens, lovely cafe. We had morning coffee and lunch, both most enjoyable.

“Lovely place, but zero service”
Reviewed 8 May 2012

Lovely place, very pretty, we went to the coffee shop, it was busy but not manic, we waited 15 minutes as we were chatting before a menu was bought over, then we ordered and after 20 minutes nothing came, tried to get a staff members attention to tell them to cancel the order but no one about so we just went, shame as I was really looking forward to it, wouldn't bother going again.

“Lovely setting”
Reviewed 2 April 2012

This has developed into a lovely setting with tanquil gardens. There is a seating area outside when weather permits and a nice conservatory area looking over the garden. The staff are polite and efficient. The menu is not so big it gets confusing but offers a range of tasty things. We found the food portions small which made it expensive in our opinion. The coffee was very nice.

“WELL WORTH A VISIT”
Reviewed 15 September 2011

What a lovely place to visit, well worth the entrance fee. The food in the cafe was excellent, the homecooked lemon drizzle cake was delicious. The gardens are a delight, lots of lovley flowers, plants and vegetables to see. The flowers are particulary pretty and well looked after. Who ever tends the gardens puts a lot of love, care and hard work into them. The woodland glades are an added bonus, a peaceful area you can walk through without any horrible signage giving you orders. If you want to visit a place which is unspoilt and uncommercialised then this is it.

“Lots to see!”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

The gardens are set in such a beautiful location. The grounds are extensive. The herbaceous borders alone make the trip worthwhile, but there is a lot more to see and do. The vegetable garden is very interesting. There is plenty to interest children. The staff are friendly and helpful. We did not sample the food but the menu looked interesting. The only reason I did not rate it Excellent is that the plant sale area wasn't very well stocked, but it was late afternoon when we visited, so maybe they had sold out.
