“Not as a garden but as a venue”

Owner description: The Rowlinson family have lived at Abbeywood since 1987, during which time they have made many improvements and additions to the gardens. The year starts in February with many varieties of Galanthus in Jane's Garden, followed by other Spring favourites, Erythroniums and Trilliums, to name but a few of her rare plants. The Main Garden is divided into separate areas. The formal layout gives way to naturalistic planting within. Early May starts with Tulips followed by Alliums and Camassia. Seasonal interest continues until around mid September - weather depending. The Christopher Lloyd inspired Exotic Garden, designed around the remnants of the old vegetable garden, is filled with Dahlias, Cannas, Banana and other tender perennials. These continue until the first frosts. The Young Arboretum is planted with rare evergreen and deciduous trees for year round interest. A 2km, wildlife walk incorporates the existing and new woodland on the 45 acre grounds.

“Not as a garden but as a venue”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

I recently had the experience of being a guest at a wedding reception held at Abbeywood Gardens, be in no doubt the gardens and the grounds are lovely, the buildings have been sympathetically renovated with a large glass house, reception/bar area and orangery.
During the evening a number of minor issues arose that could have been tactfully resolved with care and diplomacy - the problem with Abbeywood is that the owners can also be the on duty management and they do not do 'tact and diplomacy' and do not appear to have been versed in any form of customer relationship training or understanding.
If you want a garden visit and a cream tea, fine, if you were thinking of something a bit grander you might want to check who will actually be running the show for you at the event as you could have your day ruined...

“Attractive Gardens, beware if your planning a wedding function”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

We recently attended a wedding at Abbeywood Gardens. The surroundings were beautiful and the accommodation attractive.

The management for the main part of the day was organised by a young lady well versed in hospitality, though there were a couple hiccups, there were little to no problems and everything went fairly smoothly.

During the evening, the owners took more of a role in the proceedings. Unfortunately when discussing an issue we were met with an aggressive response and an inacceptable standard of hospitality.

As you can imagine this has left a very poor taste in the mouth after an otherwise fantastic day.

You will notice that we seldom get an adverse comment.

In this instance one of the guests was extremely rude to the wife of the proprietor causing needless distress, for which an unreserved apology was received. But it is apparent, as it was later in the evening that the apology was not sincere.

We treat people with respect but if they are disrespectful to members of the staff or family causing unnecessary upset we will say so.

Generally we find most people to be pleased with the service we give and treat our staff and family with respect.

“Love this place!”
Reviewed 11 April 2013

Yes it is expensive, yes the food can take some time to arrive but the cakes are too die for, the staff attentive, the coffee excellent and overall a lovely venue. Best in good weather and then you can combine with a garden visit. Save for special occasions because of the price!

“too expensive”
Reviewed 3 April 2013

Nice enough but far too expensive. Places like this are a bit of a rip-off. Ideal for people with too much time on their hands.

“Great food”
Reviewed 14 March 2013

This is the best meal we have ever had in a tea room.
Excellent home cooked food served by very pleasant staff.
We will return when it is warmer to look around the gardens.
