I was spoilt at this guest house! I arrived after a long day on the Pennine Way to a warm welcome and arrangements were immediately made to get my boots dried and to get me feeling more comfortable with coffee and biscuits. The gentleman host was very attentive and has walked this stage of the Pennine Way before, so we had a good discussion about options for the following day's walk. There were two large lounge rooms that I was welcome to use, one with sofas and TV, the other with a dining table and lots of books and maps to peruse. Both rooms were flanked by huge windows with views over hills and town - just gorgeous.
The whole house was immaculately clean. My room was a warm and cosy twin with shower ensuite. The ensuite was really tiny - just fitting a shower and toilet - but that's all I needed and there was a basin/sink with counter space and large mirror in the bedroom for freshening up. The guest house has wifi access and everything I needed was attended to. When I made a comment about my legs being sore, I was swiftly offered the use of a whirlpool bath just across the hall from my room. It was lovely to have an invigorating soak after the muddy madness of the Pennine Way forests (other walkers will understand and agree!).
On recommendation from the guest house, I had dinner at the Cheviot which was excellent. In the morning, breakfast was cooked well and my boots were brought back nice and dry. Again on recommendation, I visited the local butchers (they open very early) for the cheapest but most tasty pasties and also sandwiches for lunch. I highly recommend this place - they know what walkers want and seem really keen to ensure their guests have a good stay.
