“A beautiful hotel in an idyllic setting”
Reviewed 24 August 2012

The Domaine Du Chatelard was a surprise for us. We chose it because of its closeness to Angouleme and had expected a nice hotel but not one as picturesque and as special as this.

Having arrived, we could recall no mention on the website of the large lake it sits next to and eating an excellent dinner on the terrace overlooking the lake was a delight. Add to this friendly and helpful staff and an unexpected upgrade to a room which would not have disappointed Marie Antoinette and our experience could not have been better.

A true discovery which we will hope to benefit from in future years.

We found this hotel via an expedia search on Angouleme - and what a find. A great location overlooking a lake,a great room and a fantastic restaurant. We received a warm welcome on arrival and attentive and efficient service at dinner. Dinner itself was simply superb. This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at (and we have stayed at some pretty special places). We will be back. Very highly recommended.

My husband and I stayed for two nights after the train journey from London after hiring a car at Angouleme. The owners Pascale and Ivan, along with every staff member, all of whom speak perfect English, offer first class, friendly, personal and professional service at both the hotel and restaurant. Our room overlooked the terrace and private lake and the room and bed were extremely comfortable and elegant. Very personal service and wonderful food - breakfast is wonderful with home made conserves and fresh fruit or cooked breakfast if that's your wish. My favourite conserve was Tomates du Jardin & Vanille de Madagascar, so much so they allowed me to buy a bottle to take on our month long drive around Limousin and Auvergne. I still get to reminisce about the hotel at my own breakfast table because I brought the remainder home. Dinner was an absolute treat, one of the best we had during our month's stay in France. We loved the hotel so much we rebooked at the end of our drive around Limousin before we boarded the train to Paris. It's a little way out of town and a little difficult to find, but well worth the drive. These people go out of their way to please their guests.

The hotel location is stunning, perched on the edge of a private lake in rolling countryside. The house is very elegant, with a beautiful dinning room, lakeside terrace and comfortable rooms. The extensive grounds contain a large swimming pool, tennis court, gardens and stables. The owners and staff are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We had not realised that we would be staying over a major French holiday durung which everything (including the restaurant) was closed. However, to avoid disappointing our ten year old son - who wanted a horse riding lesson, the owner took him out on her own horse. Later that day another member of staff prepared a lovely cold buffet for ourselves and some friends, despite the kitchen being closed. Overall this is beautiful, elegant property in a stunning location run by charming hosts. Worth making the trip to this less touristy part of France.

My Husband stayed here for one night and wished we stayed the weekend!. The Junior suite was large and roomy the bathroom had a sunken bath and plenty of room. Beautiful large windows looked out over the private lake and the restaurant food was amazing, it truly was 5 class service. The staff were very helpful on the front desk, and the owners of whom one is the amazing Chef went out of their way to help us with a car rental issue we had with National/Citer, particularly dealing with the company directly for us in French. The grounds are lovely and has a pool and tennis court, not far from Angouleme along a country road, worth the stop on the way to bordeaux, this is my first trip advisor review as I was so taken with the accommodation , location and the staff.

The owner, Pascale went the whole way for a delightful stay and was most efficient, courteous and caring, along with the staff as well. Food was delicious, wine from Gerard Depardieu's winery excellent. The locations is peaceful and the hotel offers a pool, tennis court, boating on the lake upon which the hotel overlooks, horseback riding and other arranged activities, Our room was a Junior Suite that was enormous and overlooked the lake. A true gem of a find!!

We really enjoyed our stay. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who were unfailingly kind and courteous.
Breakfast was excellent. The standard of cooking at dinner was high with a quality wine list - they directed us to their wine merchant in Angouleme - highly recommended! However, it's a small Carte, so if you are staying for several days, you would wish to eat out too. Angouleme has some good restaurants - we would recommend the one at the Hotel Terminus in Place de la Gare.
The bedroom was very, very big! We had a sunken bath which was a bit of a struggle.
If staying here you need to be mindful that Dirac and other local villages are essentially "dormitory" villages. There is a hairdresser and boulangerie but not much else. Angouleme is a 15minute drive to the centre.
