“Good accommodation let down by some details”
Reviewed 13 October 2013 for a stay in September 2013

The situation of the house was delightfully set in the tiny hamlet of Le Barry and surrounded by vineyards where the vendange was in full swing during the time of our visit. We could sit on the patio and watch the machines hoovering up the grapes on the hills below the castle or listen to the chatter of the men hand picking the grapes in the small patch of vines at the end of the garden. We ate our breakfast most mornings on the patio and a few times had our dinner out there in the evening.....just make sure you have plenty of anti-midge cream to hand if you are susceptible to their bite, as I am! As we had a 3-month old grandson with us we ate in each evening having bought chicken, sausages, a lamb joint and quails from the butcher in Montpeyroux (about 8 mins walk) along with cold meats and his home made pâté. We also bought fruit & veg and bread from the local shops and made one or two trips to the well-stocked supermarket in Gignac (10 mins drive) for other essentials. Wine was purchased from the local Co-operative and from Pascale, a Wine Society supplier of excellent red, rose and white wines (we managed to squeeze 6 boxes of her wines into the boot along with 3 adults' holiday gear and baby buggy/paraphernalia !). We found the kitchen to be adequately supplied with utensils and crockery...enough to be able to fry, roast, casserole and serve the meals but we feel some updating wouldn't go amiss.....the cooker and work surfaces are showing signs of wear. It was helpful to have various dry goods left behind by previous holidaymakers....oil, salt, pepper herbs, tea, coffee, pasta....and a bottle of wine as a welcome present (we did the same).

The accommodation is spacious with plenty of seating for 4 adults or a family of four. However, the double bed has a new mattress but is only 4'6" and only suitable for a very loving couple or two small adults and our adult daughter found the single bed extremely hard and narrow, only 2'6" - fit only for a young child and certainly not for a well-proportioned adult.
The bed linen is in need of renewing and a change of colour from blue and ghastly dark green would refresh the feel ...and the pillows need to be thrown away every two or three years....these were very old..and some of the towels were very small and thin. Also, we had to wash our bedding & towels ourselves after the first week and would have expected a change of linen when staying for two weeks

The shower room was adequate for us as a family but two sets of friends might find they would prefer another shower/toilet.

There is plenty to do in the area, from walking, touring mountains (we saw a family of boars on the way to Navascelles) visiting the coast..Sete is a very busy port and we preferred Marseillan with a pretty little harbour full of parked sailing boats while their owners sampled the culinary delights of several cafes/restaurants situated steps away from the harbour. There are markets to saunter around (Clermont L' Herault. where I succumbed to buying an expensive amount of delicious chewy nougat. There are historic towns to tour (Pezenas & St. Guilhem le desert) with lovely old building but full of tourists and touristy shops.

Montpeyroux has everything you need...the butcher, the baker & the candlestick maker (!) and a couple of restaurants...the Terrasse de Mimosa in the square serves excellent inventive dishes and uses the local fruits (figs and grapes at this time) in fresh tasty deserts....we arrived just after 1.30pm for the lunchtime menu du jour only to find we had to pay the full a la carte price.... So make sure you arrive we'll before 1.30!

Don't forget to look out for local events...we had a wonderful evening of singing and music, using ancient instruments, in the le Barry church (1mins walk from la Ruine!) and one of the local cafes in Montpeyroux had a musical evening with a meal.

Sylvie, the key holder, was very helpful in lending our daughter a baby bath, cot, sheets and play mat and showing us around the house.

All in all our stay in la Ruine was very pleasant and a few upgrades would refresh and enhance the surroundings.

Thank you for your comments about La Ruine, we were delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay in Montpeyroux.
The beds are standard sizes for both the double and single beds, the owners are 6'4'' and 5'10'' and sleep comfortably in the double bed, I am sure you will agree that colour schemes are very much a personal choice!
The house is continually maintained and upgraded, this year has seen the addition of access to the garden, a new gas BBQ and an island worktop unit in the kitchen, improvements to the kitchen with the replacement of worktops are planned in the near future. Linen , pillows , and towels are looked at and changed regularly and we will be updating some as we do every year. Replacement sheets and towels are available on request for stays of more than week.

Thanks Jennifer, beds are always a very individual preference but the mattress topper is a brilliant idea. A trip to IKEA should sort it!
