“In the context of what it is, lovely.”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

I totally agree with other reviews that the staff at Villa Pozzi are all very friendly and accommodating. We had an ongoing problem with the toilet in our room. They did their best to fix it, but it would break again. As mentioned in the review, its probably time for some upgrades to the hotel. The location is very good. Close to the beach, and Riva Tregoso has a large area of free beach, although the beach is very rocky and I found it very painful to walk on in bare feet, so bring beach shoes. There is a bus stop right across from the hotel that takes you into Sestri, and the Riva train station (which has limited service) is a 15 minute walk up the hill. We had no trouble catching trains from Riva into Cinque Terre. If I was going to this area again, I'm not sure I would choose Riva to stay, but Villa Pozzi is an excellent, low cost family option for a beach stay in this area.

Room Tip: Wifi was only available in the tv lounge downstairs. Hotel is set back, so very quiet.

We stayed in Riva Trigosa a slightly smaller area in Sestri Levanto. This is really a quaint old town with sandy beach and is just lovely.
We arrived around midday checked into our hotel then as directed caught the train to The Cinque terre namely - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monerossa. In the afternoon we trained and walked to the 5 villages and back to Riva Trigosa in time for a swim then dinner.
The staff were amasing printing off the full time table of the trains and a map to get to the train station.
The breakfast was very good.
the bathroom was so large we felt like royalty.
The down side was the Airconditioning didn't work and the heat in the rooms was unbearable
Internet is down stairs in the foyer but very relaxing.

First things first, you can't really compare it to a privately owned beach resort hotel. It is owned by a religious community of nuns, but run for them by a local cooperative. No nuns on site by the way. The staff are very friendly and all rooms and communal areas are kept very clean. The rooms are functional, if a bit old fashioned, but fine if just sleeping there. 2 single beds pushed together. Small bath with hand held shower. No hairdryer but am guessing they would lend you one if needed.

I paid 80 euros including dinner and breakfast. Dinner was buffet style - two types of pasta, then chicken or fish and a choice of veggies, then a cream dessert. It was ok, but veggies lukewarm and a bit soft. Bottles of wine for 10Euros,soft drinks 1-3. Large dining room and busy with families. Breakfast was a decent range, they put out ham and cheese when we asked, no fresh fruit though. They give you a front door key so you can come and go as you like.

Riva town is small, the front promenade is pleasant and there was a fair choiceof bars and restaus. We had a good snack and beer at 'Blu Bar'. Beach a decent size, mix of private beaches and public areas.

Overall...an ok stay, staff lovely...room fine...but it could maybe do with some investment to modernise a bit?

Villa Pozzi is owned by the church and appears to serve as both a hostel and a hotel. Our family of five stayed in a single, large room with extra beds rolled in for the kids. The room was comfortable, clean and the area quiet. They also have private parking in a small lot just alongside the hotel. Vittorio is the hotel director. Very, very nice guy doing his best to take care of and look out for the best interest of the folks who stay there. We had a combined bath/ shower w/ hand-held shower head in our room so careful for those of you that might have trouble stepping into one of these (suggest you call Vittorio to see if they can set you up in a room with a walk-in shower). The first night of our stay, we wanted to go to a really nice restaurant so we asked Vittorio and, of course, he said, "stay and eat at our restaurant." We asked how much and he said 16 Euro each, chef's menu. We were a bit skeptical so we went out and ate, thankfully, at a local place called Rosi's bar (one of the best meals we had in Italy). Fortunately, we reconsidered Vittorio's offer for our second night's stay. Typical Americans, we asked for the menu and he said chef's menu (meaning chef prepares what the chef has). Didn't know what to expect. So, so glad we decided to eat there. Chef had an awesome pesto pasta, best we had in all of Italy!! Wife, who said she didn't want it as she didn't like Pesto Pasta reluctantly agreed to try it with Vittorio's prodding. She said it was the very, very good! Vegetables were also absolutely awesome. Wish we had asked for recipe/ ingredients. Rest of meal was similarly excellent.

Please be sure to visit downtown (by the beach) Sestri Levanti! Wish we had known about this the first night we stayed, but took a right when we should have taken a left.

Will gladly stay at hotel next time we're in area due primarily to the good company and care of Vittorio and his staff and we felt quite safe while there.
