“Spectacular Trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 January 2010

We booked this trip a few weeks before we went ,
And i can say it the best trip ever .
Our flight was with Monarch ,a 3 hour flight , fab seats ,great service .
We were then picked up by the owner of the Hotel ,taken to a warm cosy car , given a packed lunch, very nice touch .
Then off in to the wilderness for a 3 hour drive .
When we arrived at the |Hotel
it was a genuine Lappish Family Hotel .on the shores of Lake Inari.
Our apartment was
cosy ,log fire , very romantic clean tidy always warm .
The food was great all home cooking , we were never hungry ,even when we were out on trips , FAB .

We took part in all the trips
Which were. all wonderful .
This was booked as a 50th Birthday Treat by my partner ,
just goes to show your never to old for an Activities.
We had a great time ,meet wonderful people from South Africa ,who we hope to meet again on day
We booked with Activities abroad they were most helpful with all our question's

We booked a 6 night programme through Activities Abroad, staying over Christmas and we had such a wonderful time we didn't want to come home. This hotel was once the school in Nellim, which is a small village in the north of Finland near Lake Inari around 10km from the Russian border zone. Its a very peaceful and tranquil area well away from commercial centres in Lapland.

WELCOME: We were a group of 15 (4 families). We were welcomed at the hotel by the family that run it. We came to appreciate over our stay that its like staying with the family as opposed to just checking into a numbered room. Jouko, Mari, Marko and their other family members are very welcoming and worked hard for us during our stay. There were about 35 guests in total (2 groups of 15 or so and a couple more individuals), and this was the hotel's busiest time. With such a small number it feels very welcoming and friendly. There were some day visitors bused in but we didn't really see them as we were out on our activities programme whilst they were around.

ACCOMMODATION: The hotel has 9 rooms in the main building and 18 family apartments in two other buildings. We were in family apartment #1 which had a twin bedroom and 2 single beds in a lounge/kitchen area plus a bathroom. The apartment was comfortable and warm and reasonably well furnished. They aren't all the same layout as #2 next door to us was based on 4 beds in one room with a kitchen & bathroom. Its the luck of the draw.

FOOD: As part of our programme we were on a full board basis, with lunch generally taken whilst out on the activity of the day. Breakfast is generally cereals, fruit, meats, toast and a hot dish of the day like bacon & sausage. Lunches were mainly outdoors consisting of soup and bread or sandwiches. We cooked sausages on the fire one day at the reindeer farm. Evening meals generally contain either fish (salmon) or reindeer with pasta or rice & mashed veg. Kids can have meatballs, some days chips. Vegetarian cuisine is is little basic - one day being a bowl of beans to go with the veg.
The coffee pot is always on throughout the day if you want to take abreak, with cake & biscuits to go with it.

ACTIVITIES: This is what you come here for! We weren't sure what to expect - would we only get a taster on each event? We were pleasantly surprised. The activities are laid on by the family as opposed to any outside organisation. Snowmobiles are generally 2 persons per snowmobile, and the children travel in a sledge behind the leader. Activites were around 4 hours each day which covered most of the daylight hours in December (we didnt see the sun at all as it was below the horizon all the time!). We travelled on snowmobiles across the lake, visited a reindeer herder (26km over the lake each way on snowmobiles), snow games, Russian border visit, local church & Skolt Sami history, ice fishing and sledging. There's a great sledge run at the hotel that the kids will play on for hours and its floodlit too, with a camp fire at the bottom and a kettle for hot berry juice. The husky safari was fun, with the huskies being French, travelling up to Lapland for the season and then back to France in the summer. Shout "Allez les Chiens!" and hold on as best you can because before you know it you are away over the snow amidst much barking and enthusiasm!!! We were provided with warm outer clothing fot the duration of our stay and helmets for the Snowmobiles.

SANTA: No stay over Christmas would be complete without a visit from the big man himself, and we were very pleased to be able to see him during his break from delivering presents around the globe. He also returned when he had completed his deliveries with a little something for everyone.

SAUNAS: There are 2 saunas, one by the frozen lake. One eveining Mari took the ladies and then afterwards Jouki took the lads for a sauna & traditional roll in the snow. Not for the feint-hearted!

OTHER INFORMATION: This is a good location for a winter family holiday and the kids all played well together throughout allowing the parents to relax a bit too! If you are considering a visit to Lapland this hotel is just what it says - in the wilderness, and its not near any touristy attractions - no "Santa Land" here. There's still plenty enough for the kids to do playing in the snow & sledging outside the daily activities. Other than the "bar" & souvenir room in the hotel you really won't need any spending money, but bear in mind drinks are not cheap in Finland. Taking good photos is also particularly hard given the low light conditions at this time of year.

GETTING THERE: on the Activities Abroad programme, we flew to Oslo and then on to Kirkenes in Norway which is north of Nellim. Arriving in Kirkenes we were then told that Nellim is 4-5 hours by bus which meant we didn't arrive at the hotel until 02:00 in the morning. They did try to break the jouney with sandwiches at a reindeer farm on the way and videos on the bus for the kids. Ivalo airport is much closer and therefore would have been far more convenient.

NORTHERN LIGHTS!: I will end on a high point - we DID see the lights one evening and they were such a wonderful sight, that any review here wouldn't do them justice. You just have to see them for yourself. So start packing and I hope you have as wonderful a time as we all did. Say hello to everyone there for us!

I hope this helps to give a bit of a flavour for the Wilderness Hotel, as we couldn't find any reviews online before we went.

  • Liked — The welcoming family that run this hotel
  • Disliked — The distance from Kirkenes airport but its well worth it once you get there!
