“Warm, friendly, the real Lapland experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2011

We stayed in the Nellim Wilderniss Hotel from 29 January till 5 February for our Lapland adventure (booked via www.zuiderhuis.be or Laplandreizen.be). Airport pick-up was perfectly organized. The rooms are clean and typical (all wood), but our room n° 5 had a lock problem, so they changed us to room n° 1 after 2 days (super room !). Food is very good, breakfast is very nice. The hotel has perfect material available for his guests : brand new overalls for the cold, brand new snowscooters, skis, snowrackets, boots, gloves, caps, .... Our trip was organized with a lot of activities by our travel agencies and it was really great, but you can book your activities at the hotel also. Youko and his wife , the hotel owners, are really nice and warm people, as well as Mamy (Armi is her name) who sees to it that all the guests are having a great time. Please note that the rooms are not cleaned and towels are not changed during your stay, but you can ask towels whenever you like.
The only negative point was the sauna, which was not really the real thing.

This holiday was wonderful, it was everything we expected and more, the whole trip was a great experience we met some really nice people. You could do as much or as little as you wanted, the guides were great very helpful and friendly. If you go in the winter time be prepared for very cold weather my advise would be to definately take hand & toe hotties they were a god send because if you feel the cold anywhere it will be in your hands & feet. We were very lucky and managed to see the Northern Lights three times in five days and they were fantastic no photograph could ever do them justice. The food in the hotel was basic but very nice and filling. I would certainly go back if you like remote then this is the ideal place to go.

Great fun and activities - very relaxed staff and agendas. Don't expect a rigid agenda, it workd better if you don't have one anyway; better for seeing the northern lights and weather.

Only downsides- everything is expensive, the food is not satisfactory.
TAKE SOME BOOZE IN YOUR HOLD LUGAGE- you'll be shocked at the prices there!

Nellim WIlderness Hotel really made our holiday one we will remember for the rest of our lives. We stayed from the 27th November for a week and with it being the beginning of the season it was wonderfully quiet and we really felt spoilt. The hotel is very warm and cosy with a lovely lounge area to sit and read before dinner while sipping free tea and eating copious amounts of delicious finnish gingerbread, take your slippers to mooch around in! There was also a sauna they put on especially for us when we'd been out snow shoeing and cross country skiing, helped our muscles not ache so much the next day! The food was great too, very wholesome and tasty and always 3 courses. It was lovely to not have to choose from a menu and just be fed, like being a child again!!

The activities were fabulous (although no reindeer sleigh ride, I think because it was too early in the season, they do this around Christmas I guess), each day we had about 4 or so hours or whichever activity we were doing, plus lunch out in the wilderness most days (fresh fish on the fire that we caught an hour before, reindeer soup, cheese toasties, all very tasty) and the fantastic guide really made these days special for us, always full of information and stories about the places we visited, we learnt a lot! On our day off we borrowed cross country skis (no charge) and took ourselves off around the lakes for a few hours, it was so quiet and beautiful.

I was a bit concerned about what to take with us when we went so just a quick note on that, I'm not sure about how it would work in high season (I'm pretty sure it would be the same) but you get given big waterproof and insulated boots and big wooly socks which we wore every time we went out rather than our own, big thick mittens and also you get an all-in-one thermal suit for the days (and nights on the lake watching the aurora!) when you aren't doing physical activity (i.e. ski-doo days and husky safari days). We also borrowed a headlight from our guide but I don't think this is something you'd be able to do when there's a lot of other people there so I'd advise taking one as it's very dark at night and they're very useful to be able to see where you're going! Every day we wore baselayers, 2 pairs of our own socks (ski/wool ones) plus the wool ones you get given, ski trousers, a wool jumper, a fleece and a ski jacket. On the snow shoeing/skiing day we went without the wool jumper layer. We also needed our liner gloves and waterproof lined ski gloves to mix and match with the mittens they gave us depending on the activity. Inside I just wore my jeans plus a t-shirt and maybe a cardigan. Hope that helps some first timers like we were!

We had the time of our lives at the Nellim Wilderness hotel. It is a family run hotel with a real personal touch. For instance, Jouko met us personally at the airport and stopped the car on the way as he had spotted a beautiful milkyway in the night sky. The room was basic but I think this added to the experience of living in the "wilderness" for us. The food is home cooked and hearty.

The activities are where this hotel excelled. The husky driving was fabulous, the dogs being so well trained you can drive your own team. We did a day snowshoeing and a day cross country skiing and loved both days, stopping for lunch over a campfire. Howwever the reindeer day was slightly disappointing with feeding the reindeer amounting to putting some hay in a clearing and waiting for the reindeer to come, we actually got closer and saw more snowmobiling and snowshoeing. By far the highlight of the trip was the full day safari on snowmobiles, it was so good we did this again on our free day. Do not think that you can skip this because you do snowmobiling on the other trips. Not sure if we just got lucky but we had an amazing time flying across frozen lakes and weaving through frozen forests. The scenery we saw was breathtaking. The instructors are full of enthusiasm and knowledge of Lapish culture and they were a big part of why we had such wonderful time. All the hotel staff made you feel welcome and at ease whenever you went to the public areas.

Some points which people may not like, no tea and coffee in rooms, you have to go across to the main building where its always available free. Same with WiFi, but all the activities are right from the hotel doorstep.

There was a few things going on which I haven't seen advertised such as sleeping in an igloo and overnight ski/snowmobile trips.

Lastly as this hotel is so far north we saw the Northern lights several times. The best time the hotel staff came and got us from out room and they were absolutely spectacular. It's worth doing the trip too though.

We absolutely would recommend this hotel for the adventurer. Remember that the activities involve 5 hours outside in -20 conditions, if your not the outdoor type you will not enjoy it, some of the guests seemed totally unprepared for how cold it was. They do provide all outer clothing such as suits, gloves, hats and shoes but I had 8 layers on one day!! Also I have read its a waste of time bringing ski gear but you don't wear your suits skiing or shoeing as they are too hot so I would recommend bringing them.

Book up and enjoy!!!

We stayed at the Wilderness hotel for 5 nights and our stay was great from beginning to end. Picked up at Kittila airport, given lunch to eat on the journey. Quite a long way (about 4 hours) but lovely scenery and very comfortable minibus. On arrival we were taken to our apartment. Really big, warm, clean and a great sauna. Food was home cooked, tasty and plenty of it.
Snowmobile safari was a brilliant day. We saw local fisherman ice fishing, built a fire and ate lunch and toured the local village.
Night time snowmobile safari was great too. A bit cold but we built a fire in one of the huts and had warm drinks. We saw the lights and that was something we will never forget.
Husky sledging was great fun - even it was a bit smelly!! I don't think you really need quite as long but it was a very cold day when we went. - 24!
The people at the reindeer farm are delightful and make you so welcome. It was a very interesting day.
All the guides on the trip were lovely people and great fun. Our two teenage boys absolutely loved the holiday.
The owners and staff were great too - nothing too much trouble. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and we hope to return one day. Maybe in the Summer!!

We booked this trip a few weeks before we went ,
And i can say it the best trip ever .
Our flight was with Monarch ,a 3 hour flight , fab seats ,great service .
