Willersley Castle Hotel
Reviewed 6 July 2014

The inside of the hotel isn't as luxurious as the outside led us to expect, but that said, it was still very pleasant.
Our room (40) was nice and spacious, with a decent sized bathroom and appeared to have been recently redecorated. It was very pleasant, with a large comfortable bed. I believe it was two smaller beds joined together, but we couldn't feel the join and had an excellent nights sleep.
The shower was powerful and stayed at a nice constant temperature and the toiletries were plentiful.
The curtains were not very thick, and didn't cut out the light so anyone hoping to sleep late would have been disappointed.
We did have a TV in our room but the room was too far away from reception to pick up the wifi and there wasn't a mobile phone signal.
The view from the room would have been stunning if it hadn't been for the scaffolding up the front of that part of the building obscuring the view, I did find that rather disappointing and can only hope that was temporary.
We didn't try the food so only met one member of staff, at reception, she was very helpful and friendly.
We very much enjoyed using the swimming pool which is a decent size and the water temperature was just right.
Quite surprised that a hotel of that size didn't have a bar, but apparently you can order drinks from the waiter, not sure how late drinks can be ordered though.
A very peaceful location, ideal if you want to get away from it all.

Thank you for your kind review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay with us at the Castle. The scaffolding was indeed temporary, we were undergoing a full roof replacement which is now complete. With reference to drinks service there is a receptionist on until 11pm and so drinks are generally available until then.

Again thank you for your review and we hope to see you again soon

Take care

Came on a Sunday afternoon, told that there were only 3 scones left...not enough for the 7 of us! Offered alternatives & asked to pay full price! Poor quality food, stale scones & sandwiches, cream that tasted sour and was out of a can.
Made a complaint to the manager who said they will look into it & halved our bill. Hopefully this feedback is listened to & things will change for other customers wanting to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Thank you for your review regarding afternoon tea, unfortunately on busy occasions we do run out of scones as they are cooked fresh daily. I am sorry that the standard was not up to your expectations but am glad the Duty Manager was able to adjust your bill accordingly.

Many thanks again for your review

Myself and a friend visited Willersley Castle and didn't know what to expect. We entered the drawing room to find we were able to have seats with a nice view across the valley. We wanted a nice chat in a relaxed atmosphere at a leisurely pace. The afternoon tea was presented with 4 quarters of sandwiches; tuna mayo, egg mayo, cheese and ham. Fruit scone with jam and cream, and included a pot of tea. The price was value for money at £6.95 each. It was a rainy day and we would like to revisited on a sunny afternoon and venture outside to relax in a beautiful setting.

A perfect base for exploring the area. Comfortable room with everything you could need. Yes there is no TV but you're on holiday to get away from it all, right? They are in the process of installing tvs in the rooms though. The pool was a welcome bonus after a days sightseeing. The staff are really knowledgeable and provided tips of the best places to visit. The scenery is amazing and the views from the rooms unbeatable. A comfortable place to stay and a great value for money. There was no pressure to take part in worship. We didn't eat in the castle but it smelt amazing. The town is a 5 min walk away with a newsagents and a few pubs. Will be back in the future for sure as ran out of time to see everything!

I stayed at this hotel on business on 14th May 2014. On the outside the hotel looks very nice, in a nice county setting.

On checking in I found the Hotel has a strange policy of only 1 setting for Dinner at 06:30pm, which is not suitable for business users as I was still working at this time in Northampton, so when I arrived I had to find dinner in Cromford Town before 09:00 pm where everything stops serving dinner.

They also only do 1 sitting for breakfast the following day 08:00 - 09:00 (1 hour) again not suitable for business users.

It was a very warm day, and I found the room very hot, and this was because the hotel had the heating and radiators still switched on. With no air conditioning in the rooms, the only thing you can do is open a window. I also found one of the towels they gave me had a dirty stain on it, and the double bed, was actually 2 single bed matrasses pushed together and not very comfortable to sleep on as the matrasses seemed not very supportive and I suspect that some of the springs were damaged.

The building and rooms seemed very dated, and need of some quite serious repair as there was some very large cracks in the ceiling. Also a large part of the hotel was under repair, and the back of the hotel was surrounded by scaffolding.

There was no TV in the room, only a radio, so not much to do in the evening.

On a plus note the view and setting of the hotel was very nice, so this hotel still has something to offer location wise, but I think the main users are older retired couples that use the hotel as a base for the Derbyshire Dales and local attractions, and over hearing some conversations I think that there are in organised groups that I suspect come back year after year, and is the main source of the hotels income. They were certainly at least 80% of the residents staying in the hotel that day.
I saw a young Italian couple staying at the hotel that looked very subdued and confused by all these strange outdated arrangements. To be frank, having stayed all over the world I was quite embarrassed that foreign visitors have to be subjected to this sort of thing in the UK, and would go as far as saying that places like this damage our tourist industry.

Over all I think if this hotel wants to attract business travelers and foreign tourists then this hotel needs a lot of updating in services and maintenance to bring it kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

Room Tip: Do not stay at this hotel until a lot of work has been done.

Dear TroncLondon

Thank you for your review on Tripadvisor. Naturally we are dissapointed with your reveiw as on the whole we get positive responses from our guests. This said, we take all comments very seriously and value your feedback. The bed that you had within your room is what is known as a zip'n'link bed which most hotels use in an effort to have more more flexibility within its bed stock offering both Double or Twin options. We apologise if you felt this wasnt suitable but would like to assure you that these beds are quite common around the world.

We are currently fairly restricted with dining times but over the next few months the opening hours of the kitchen will indeed be opened up to enable more flexibility to the guests.

We have just completed a full roof refit, which for a grade II listed building is not cheap. To add to this we have started cabling for Televisions within the rooms and these should be rolled out by the Summer. In saying this, all the information that you will have looked at and receieved states that there are no TV's so you wouldhave been aware of this fact before booking.

To add to the investment over the next few months we will be refurbishing both dining rooms and the drawing room. The bedrooms have a constant rolling refurbishment plan and we do them as we can.

We have many different nationality of guest and on the whole they find Willersley Castle Hotel a unique and pleasureable place to stay. Willersley Castle Hotel is either something you like, or you dont and I am sorry that for you it was the latter.

I do hope that you will be able to join us again at some point so that you may see the improvements we are making and thank you again for your feedback

Kindest regards

We arrived here as part of a party from the Fylde Naturalist's Society. Our organisers had done a good job and the negotiated price was good.
The hotel is a beautiful, historic building (former the home of the Arkwright family of Cromford Mill fame) with stunning views over the river.
Our room was okay but a bit worn. The view from the window was of the cliff at the back of the hotel. The bed was comfy, but pillows too hard. The wifi didn't reach our room, but three was usable on my 3g phone. No TV in the room but a television room with comfy chairs is available on the ground floor. Some of our group had rooms in the mews which was not in the main building and involved a short walk up a steep hill in the rain. They were not impressed.
The breakfast was plentiful with lots of choice. The choice was good and the breakfast was well cooked. It was all self-service apart from drinks and toast which were brought to our table. The evening meals were not as good and the chef had some strange ideas, but we ate well and were never hungry.
There are plenty of walks through the grounds, either into Matlock or along the canal in Cromford. Our group did a 6 mile walk around the valley. We also visited Carsington Water, Blue John Cavern, and Dovedale. So plenty to do in the area.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay and might go again. But if you want 5* luxury with TV in your room/ wifi that works everywhere/ modern decor and pristine rooms then this is not for you......
