We paid a bit extra for one of the bigger rooms and it was huge with lovely views. However the shower was a trickle and the breakfast close to indelible. Staff were willing but seemed exhausted! A great location but the hotel is tired and what money has been spent seems to have been haphazard and has ignored much of the inherent beauty of the building.

A truly lovely week was had at the Alison House Hotel. Perfectly situated for walking, trains and bus routes to attractions. The staff and manager are very friendly, the breakfast catrers for all tastes and an occasional coffee spent admiring the scenery. This is also a dog friendly place. We went to Cromford Mill, the canal walk, Abrahams Heights and Chattsworth. Some great eating places in the village, try the Market Place, the Boat house and the Hotel itself.

Arrived at 8.20pm, no one on reception, rang bell several times, still nothing. After 3/4 mins went looking & found 3 people chatting in kitchen!
All staff were very friendly and helpful.
Room and en-suite very clean and comfortable, beautiful pristine white bedspreads, very warm and were pleased to have blanket instead of duvet which would've been too hot. Character room with furniture suited, very pleasing.
However, there was a constant motor noise throughout night (was going to complain but realised it was 11.30 and reception wouldn't be manned) seemed to be a fan, but wasn't from our room, but came from inside house not outside, all very annoying and meant disturbed sleep. When mentioned on checkout, receptionist didn't know what it was as that room is normally a very quiet one. - not last night!!
Also disappointed by little annoyances at breakfast,
- no plain yoghurt, only 'Sainsbury's basic' - yuk!
- table cloth had dried gravy stain - from previous night?
all other tables had a lovely little stand of Jams, honey and marmalade, not ours, and had to go to reception to ask for marmalade, was brought 1 x28g jar only, no other choices, so would've had to go and ask for more if my daughter had wanted toast.
All very disappointing from a 4* would not expect such basic flaws.
But would still stay again if in area.

Everything was really good: staff extremely helpful; room (Arkwright suite) was large , airy and clean; location peaceful, but with local village within 5 minute walk; food good & filling. Would stay again if back in this area.

We were attending an evening concert at Chatsworth House so wanted a local room for the night and must admit we cant wait to return to spend longer at the most friendliest hotel we have stayed at for a very long time. The staff just could not do enough to help and nothing was too much trouble for them. If we had to find a criticism it would be the noise of the kitchen's extractor fan but the relaxing setting made up for this. Will cetainly be back before the end of the year. Many thanks for a lovely stay.

We stayed for three nights at this hotel. There are no signs on the main road to direct you to the hotel which is set back in its own attrative grounds from that road.We had a twin room with en-suite bathroom on a package deal which included dinner on one night and two tickets to Chatsworth House.
The room was a reasonable size and was clean. The furniture was a little tired but the beds were comfortable. The cold water tap in the bathroom sink was loose and the window blind did not reach the bottom of the window. The shower cubicle was small and the water pressure in the shower was not very good but everything was clean. The towels were a good size and were fluffy.
Dinner was a pleasant enough meal with a reasonable choice on the menu and good portion sizes.
The breakfast choice was good and if you were not having cooked food was a buffet. There was a bar and a residents lounge but we do not think the lounge could have sat all the guests if the hotel was full. Given the semi-rural location of the hotel it was very quiet at night but was also only a few minutes walk from Cromford village. The staff were friendly and efficient.

Room Tip: We understand that Deluxe rooms are better appointed.

Stayed on a Friday night before a trip to Bakewell. This is a lovely hotel. We had one of the larger double rooms, which was super clean and the bathroom was beautiful. A+ for the staff - all we so helpful and polite, particularly when we needed a second room at really short notice. We didn't stop for the evening meal in the hotel, but took the short walk to Cromford. However, the breakfast was delicious and freshly cooked. I'd recommend this to anyone seeking a quiet, laid back place - and don't forget to have a walk out into the gardens!
