“Fantastic Oaks”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

We stopped for 4 nights in the self catering holiday cottage called The Oaks.
The cottage was a one bedroom cottage and was well equipped.
Very close to the village of Cromford with a few shops and pubs. The Boat Inn was a favourite of ours ( including Ace the dog). Only a 20 min walk to Matlock Bath and loads of other plentiful walks on the doorstep.
Would definitely recommend and will definitely go back!

We stayed here for one night with a party of 11 for an 80th birthday, we had 3 generations, 5 veggies, many many ridiculous requests for surprises and decorations and cakes etc and they cooperated and were more than helpful throughout!! They provided plenty of choice for the vegetarians and the food was lovely, we stayed up drinking, nattering and playing charades in the lounge and the service continued until we headed to bed. I cannot speak more highly of the place or the staff!!!

The food was lovely, my portion of lamb chops was very generous and well cooked! Breakfast was all very good with a good selection of food available!

The rooms were lovely, most of us stayed in the cottage and the rooms were lovely.

I would highly reccomend this place to anyone and would like to say a big thank you to all the staff there, the weekend was a huge hit with all!!

Stayed overnight whist visiting customers. We had a good sized room with views of the beautiful gardens. Dinner was good, with a varied menu. The wi-fi was poor. Parking was ample.
The only thing that let the place down was understaffing at breakfast.......the duty manager worked like a mad man to get it all done, but there is only so much that one person can do ! The little town / hamlet of Matlock Bath is delightful and we will be back next year as tourists. When we return we will be sure to stay at Alison House.

We stayed for a Saturday night last week and had a short but very enjoyable stay. Having arrived at 7 o clock we had been told previously that as there was a wedding on so we could not have a meal at the hotel. So then it was a trek down the dark, unlit rear path to Cromford village to have a meal at the Market Place Restaurant.(which was very good actually)
Our room was in the old stable block and was roomy and well decorated with a nice comfortable king size bed. The bathroom was clean but a little dated, the shower was tricky to operate and not very powerful but all in all the facilities were completely adequate.
Breakfast was very tasty and well cooked with cheerful service, we even had time to walk around the grounds before heading off to Dovedale.

A short whistle stop visit and we really wish we could of arrived earlier and stayed later, we will do next time we stay !!

One suggestion , a complimentary torch to use when walking down the rear path please.

Stayed here last night after a day at Chatsworth. Lovely quiet location with beautifully tended gardens. We found all the staff to be very friendly and welcoming, very nicely decorated bedroom (Room4) and good lounge to sit in with the newspapers. We had dinner - 2 courses for £12.95 which we both enjoyed very much, quite a few dining and a good atmosphere. Breakfast was also well done, good choice of fresh fruit and cereals and a well cooked full English breakfast, served quickly by very efficient staff.
We'll definitely stay here again.

As a couple - and along with another couple - we have just spent 3 nights at Alison House Hotel. A place which could be beautiful with just a little more attention. Our room was supposed to be a double but there wasn't enough room for a second chair to be placed in it even though we requested one. The carpets were filthy , as was the shower, which had not been cleaned properly for a very long time and with mouldy grouting. The rooms were not cleaned daily nor the towels changed. Cups remained unwashed on more than one occasion. This is a lovely old house set in beautifully tended gardens and with excellent food. The staff (apart from any cleaning staff) were friendly and attentive. The public salons are lovely rooms and a pleasure to sit in. The outside paintwork is peeling off and looks really sad. This hotel has 4stars but I'm not sure why. We have travelled a lot and stayed in a variety of accomodation over many years but never one as unloved as this place. Even in budget hotels you get your room cleaned. Someone needs to get their act together to turn this place into what it could so easily become - a beautiful place to take a break.

Room Tip: Avoid being placed in The Cottage rooms

Booked a family room almost at the last minute for 2 nights during Aug Bank Holiday weekend at a very reasonable rate. Hotel was fully booked, but this was only evident at breakfast and by how busy the car park was. It is an old building with various extensions added to it and a bit of a maze, some areas feel in need of a refurbishment but on the other hand this adds to its charm unless you like all things modern. The grounds are lovely, location is very convenient for visiting different areas of Peak District – Matlock nearby and only about 30 min drive to Edale. We were pleased with the family room we stayed in – I think they only have one. We have 2 teenage children, a girl and a boy, and finding a suitable family room isn’t always that easy, but this room was perfect as far as sleeping was concerned: a superking bed in the middle of the room with two single beds either side, all very comfortable. There wasn’t much storage – only one small wardrobe - and the bathroom had no shelves for toiletries but we only used the room at night and were quite happy to live ‘out of suitcases’ for a couple of days. There was no hairdryer in the room but the receptionist quickly delivered one as soon as I asked for it. WiFi worked intermittently in the room on the first day and didn’t work at all after that – better connection in the lounge/reception area but the family room is located in the other part of the building. A member of staff explained that they were experiencing a temporary problem. Again, didn’t cause us too much of a problem as we were there for a holiday, not work.
Breakfast was good and the restaurant was also open in the evening but we didn’t try their evening meals, although looking at their menu we wished that we had because dinner at nearby Greyhound hotel was a bit of a disappointment, and I suspect that we would’ve received a tastier meal at a cheaper price had we stayed for dinner at Alison House.
If a good size family room with large comfortable beds and good breakfast in a nice location at a sensible price is what you are after, then I wouldn’t look any further.

Tip - bring a torch if you intend to walk back to the hotel in the dark.
