“Masterchef in résidence”
Reviewed 5 April 2013

Nice country hotel just off Sanquhar main town. Not much to do around Sanquhar?- think again!
Drumlanrig Castle, Threave Castle and Gardens, Solway coastline, Museum of National Costume and a great drive along Galloway's Red Kite trail - and yes you do get to actually see these great birds as you drive along. Drive a wee bit further north and you can visit Dumfries house.
So why Blackaddie Hotel? Simply because the chef in residence is a genuine first class Masterchef. The youngest Englishman to gain a Michelin award, he has aged a bit but his experience tells and the food was sublime.
The sad fact though is that we were on our own in the dining room!
If you want great food, in a nice country hotel with ambitions, then do NOT be put off by the fact that it is in Sanquhar. Go there and give these places your support. P.S The local TollHouse in Sanquhar has some cracking stories to read!

Had a 1 night stay here on an offer from Travelzoo. The room we were given was beautiful and had been recently refurbished from two smaller rooms. The bathroom was amazing with a huge shower cubicle and a whirlpool bath and was immaculate. The room had a comfortable leather sofa and an armchair so no more sitting on the bed to watch the TV which I hate! Bed was huge and very comfortable. Nice touches with home-made biscuits and tablet on the tea/coffee tray. Despite a slightly limited menu (the hotel was very quiet and it was March after all)- the food was absolutely excellent and was one of the best I have eaten. Hotel location is right on the river Nith and is very quiet. Open fire in the small bar which you get to feed with logs while perusing the dinner menu.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room!

We are just home from our second stay at the Blackaddie Hotel, and very much intend to return for future visits when possible. Returning to a hotel always feels a bit risky - can they really live up to your memory of last time? Well, here they can!
The food experience of eating from the al a carte menu at this hotel is excellent, and the Gourmet Menu is seriously astonishing - Ian has a real 'feel' for flavours, textures and colours, and selects from both the freshest and finest of local produce to present many of the best plates of food we have ever tasted. All aspects of presentation are considered, achieving the highest of 'Fine Dining' experience. This is the sort of eating that leaves you feeling that everyday food may satisfy your hunger but usually omits to engage most of your other senses. Ian - like other Fine Dining Chefs - sensitively selects and recruits the mind as well as the tastebuds of the diner by matching complementary flavours or introducing textures or flavours that challenge credibility and can overwhelm expectation - and vocabulary. We were certainly lost for words after several of our courses - "Wow!" just seemed kinda insufficient!
All of the staff made each of us most welcome - two adults - and a bouncy 3 year old standard poodle who assumes people exist to make a fuss of her. That a hotel of this calibre is willing to welcome dogs is both refreshing and delightful - and an extremely good reason to visit this hotel - add the Fine Dining experience and extensive bar range (including four types of gin, three different ports and a fine selection of whiskey).
Our room was comfortable, clean and spacious - one of several refurbished rooms completed since Ian and Jane took over the hotel just about five or six years ago. That quality refurbishment takes time is inevitable, especially to achieve the highest standards of finish, and Jane and Ian are certainly determined not to cut corners. We look forward to seeing the next of their achievements when we get to Blackaddie next time.
Access through the edge of an industrial site is a little unexpected - though this is more recent than the house itself. The view from our room included contented sheep and spectacular rushing river, with stately houses, historic sites and great beaches within easy reach of this location.
Perhaps expensive, but definitely worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for a recently renovated room.

Just back from a long weekend at Blackaddie Hotel (first visit) and enjoyed two great dinners which rank among some of the best we have had......... anywhere.......... ever. Well balanced and thoughtful menus, superbly cooked and without any pretention whatsoever. How refreshing! The Hotel itself is fairly average (Admiral Crichton's former residence apparently) but it sits on the banks of the river Nith and has a pleasant outlook up the river. There is nothing wrong with the hotel - it is just unremarkable when compared to the astonishing food that emerges from the kitchen. It is Michelin star cooking without the star (yet). The chef/owner, Ian McAndrew was apparently the youngest chef in his time to be awarded a star and it shows. There is probably not a restuarant short of Edinburgh or Glasgow that can touch this place, so it is worth a visit if you happen to be on the road from Dumfries to Ayr (and if you are not, make a detour). If you have never tasted tarragon ice cream (served with beetroot and crumbled goat's cheese), this could be your big day! The grading goes to the restaurant (not the Hotel).

Room Tip: We were in Grouse which is their biggest room (at the corner with windows on two walls) . Lots of sp...

Myself, girlfriend and our two dogs were welcomed at the front door by Jane. We were made to feel very welcome the moment we stepped thought the door.
Our room was lovely, the bed was so comfy. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate as well as tablet welcomed us in the room.
The surrounding areas were beautiful, we went on a long 2 hour walk where the dogs could round up the sheep like they were going back to their roots and we could walk with it being so peaceful and the only noise was the sound of the river going by. This walk being recommends by Jane of course and one of the chefs. I recommend you take your wellies as we did.
Then came dinner time. All I can say is WOW!! As we waited in the bar, having chose our courses from the menu we were given some aperitif as we waited, goats cheese milkshake ( not to my taste ) and a spoonful of the smoothest pâté with some cabbage and something else I can't remember. For my starter I had a chicken balotine, it was beautifully presented and it was quite nice. She had a butternut squash soup, it was absolutely sublime especially with the freshly made selection of different breads. My main course of duck was one of the tastiest I have ever had in my life and she thoroughly enjoyed her pollock dish with a mussel sauce. And the pudding was interesting. Fennel carrot cake with ice cream and an olive biscuit thing.
Breakfast had an amazing selection, we both chose a Scottish breakfast and we could pick and choose the components.
Everybody was so nice and helpful and the thing I liked most was the fact that the staff were so helpful, nothing was ever a problem, so happy to make our stay as relaxed and as good as can be.
I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS LOVELY HOTEL AND I EVEN HIGHLY REGARD THE FOOD AS SOME OF THE BEST.

Just go!!!

Stayed at Blackaddie through special offer on Travelzoo.
Went there basically as the food is highly recommended and I would agree.
Small set menu but each course was delicious.
Started with drink in conservatory and were served small hors d'ouevres. There was a fairly large party in so we dined in what I assume is breakfast room on our own. The atmosphere and background music was not great, the lighting a bit glaring and a bit of kitchen noise.
We felt a bit forgotten but the waitress was most lovely and was working very hard. My pet hate - sad chrysanthemums in a vase, on the table, if having flowers please not those.
Didn't have breakfast as the room, and view ,was very comfortable.
So, comfortable, warm, friendly hotel, work in progress. Delicious restaurant food at good price but a little bit of tweeking to give the dining room more character could make it a more special experience. Would I go again, yes.

Spent 3 days at Blackaddie over Christmas. I have to say this was one of the most relaxed Christmases I have ever spent. More like a house party than a hotel, but with all the goodies thrown in! The new rooms are lovely and the food was superb - as ever. Ian and Jane and the rest of the staff were extremely pleasant and it felt as though you were a house guest rather than a hotel guest.
Couldn't have asked for more!
