Owner description: Home of the Marquess of Anglesey, with spectacular views of Snowdonia.Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association, containing his largest painting and exhibition.A military museum contains relics from the 1st Marquess of Anglesey's tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There's a fine spring garden and Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, a summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour.A woodland walk gives access to a marine path beside the Menai Strait.

Lovely place to visit with lots of walks in the area. Volunteers very knowledgeable and friendly. Nice views of the Menai Straight.

This house is set in lovely woodland with beautiful views across the Menai Straights.
We went simply because as NT members you can go even in passing.
Fantastic trees and lawns, lovely for families with children who could run free. Lots of subtle touches like the Tree House and Playground make family times in today’s world so enjoyable
It had a very relaxed feel to it and I heard plenty of laughter from the children. All combined with the peacefulness of water and woodland made a lovely couple of hours.

Visited midweek and have to say it’s a fabulous setting.
However... not for me.. it’s a 1930’s sort of decor and a military museum bit attached. Staff were helpful but the place was very full of senior citizens and it lacked direction or some sort of route round.
Bit boring.. been once.. wouldn’t go again.

We arrived early so we could have a wander, the gardens are kept superbly but the house seems empty, lots about Rex Whistler but not about the owners of the house past I'm afraid. Having read the previous reviews of the place they are all about the fabulous gardens, which are not my thing the history of the owners is also the architecture but nothing about that. There were very few people around to ask, sadly it is one house I will not return to.

Gorgeous house interior which belies the austere outside.
Lovely views and walks around the house.
Nice gardens and Snowdon as a backdrop.
Loved this place then discovered it was one of Uxbridges homes,( Cavalry commander at Waterloo) with a nice little gallery as a tribute to this good chap.

Thank Andy K
