“if you want to vacation in Germany, err, Thailand”
Reviewed 30 July 2007

We booked 2 weeks in Thailand: one week in Siam Residence and then a week in a luxury property on the Phuket island.
Let me solve the mystery of the eerie feeling (and the empty villas). The manager explained to us that a Swiss casino owner keeps this property for his personal enjoyment, having it ready in case he or his family, friends, business associates, etc wish to make a quick trip to Thailand. He allows some villas to be rented so that the staff has something to do. Villas are generous in size, you do have the pool pretty much to yourself, and there is huge boat you can rent I think 4 hours minimum. Yes, there are Swiss and German guests there who visit every year, order only viener schnitzel every meal, read german paperbacks, and not only never leave the property but never leave their lounge chair - not even to swim in the gorgeous pool. I suspect they hardly noticed that they are in Thailand. But then the exotic is at your fingertips - we rented a 100cc motorbike and had a blast - every evening we drove to a different restuarant (10-15 minutes away), and so the food was fantastic. Who said you have to eat in your own hotel every night? We are in our 40's, and love the motorbike - the warm breeze, the ability to visit a local market and stock up on fresh local fruit, sightseeing....
During the day, we enjoyed the tranquility and peace of that place.
It wasn't so bad!!! of course you can find super resorts with top-of-evertyhing, but Siam residence was something like 100 dollars a night including the breakfast. We stayind in worse places on Koh samui, and for more money.

Me and my boyfriend arrived in Ko Samui on our 2nd week of our holiday and we firsty stayed at another hotel near to North of Island. I found this place on the internet as we wanted to explore the ireland.. We were greeted by a non english speaking person at reception who then had a find a burly austrian man who took us to show us the rooms available. Even though it was late in the evening they were more than happy to show us around the rooms. They showed us to a cottage which was sitauted opposite the pool. The resort seemes empty and quite eery , but I thought the size of the cottage was enormous and bathroom huge also. As we were tired and we thought all the other guests must be out or in their own cottages we thought the hotel was quite peaceful after all it was late a tnight. Anyway to sum it up the beach there is full of rubbish, the food is over priced, and the staff are always tending to the immaculate garden scupltures. We went further down the beach one night and found a nice bar restaurant with its own hotel and there was more atmosphere so we ended up going down there all the time, one night we we were attacked by a family of crabs that chased us half way down the desloate beach. The whole resort is dated, and most of the guests were german and much older.. i wouldnt recoomend to younger couples as this place is boring and not very friendly...

Our experience was dramatically different to other reviewers. Inspired by previous reviews my wife and I booked in for 6 nights and left after 15 minutes. The property is totally isolated on a far from impressive and scruffy beach. The rooms were large, but old furniture and fittings plus the lack of air conditioing in bathroom, dressing area and closets (the result being the overpowering odour of mildew) were far from impressive. The property is in a general run down condition - there are hundreds of better options in magnificent Thailand.

My husband & I spent 2 smashing weeks at the Siam Residence at the end of February – I found it by scouring the internet, it is certainly not advertised anywhere in the “English” tourist press. I was a bit worried because I could not find a review for this hotel ANYWHERE – what IS wrong with this place I wondered!

The answer is nothing……….. it is an Austrian owned place and they are keeping a very well kept secret to themselves – we were the only British guests there. The hotel is gorgeous; it sits right on a quiet beach on the west side of Koh Samui, about 2 miles for the main town of Na Thon. The hotel has only 20 rooms and each “room” is an individual Thai style cottage with a huge bedroom (4 poster bed), a huge lounge area (TV, DVD, fridge etc) and a bathroom which you could hold a party in as it has a huge Jacuzzi in it! We paid extra to have a sea view cottage with the sunsets included in the price - the picture attached says it all.

Despite the fact it is Austrian owned; the lingua franca in the hotel is actually English, so no problem there! In fact the other guests had the problems as most of the staff spoke English rather than German, but most of the guests (who were smashing – no bagging of sun beds here!) spoke very good English too. (Shame on us Brits!). The web page which I used to book the hotel, and which to my mind is one of the best I have come across, is in English and German. Also the booking team, who are based in Vienna, speak perfect English.

We normally hate hotel food, but here it was the complete exception, with only 20 rooms the food was freshly cooked from an extensive menu – and you could pre-order practically anything you wanted.

For all this unadulterated luxury we paid about £60 a night each and the main meal was about £5 each (booze extra!)

Despite it is not in or near any commercialised resorts the hotel runs a shuttle bus into “town” and most of the local restaurants will pick you up and return you for nothing, and taxis are very cheap.

If you go and enjoy this hotel, don’t tell everyone about this place it should be kept as a well kept secret in case they put up their prices!!
