This is lovely spot, a quiet location in the center of the village. The accommodation is excellent, traditional but with the modern touches of up to date bathroom and kitchen, with enough equipment in the kitchen to make catering easy if required. The breakfast provided by Eleonora was excellent and far outdid any other I have had in Holland.
The lovely garden with the provision of a private garden for guests is a thoughtful touch.
The welcome is warm, the food and accommodation are excellent, the rabbit is good fun
I can thoroughly recommend In Den Ouden Vesting to anyone travelling in this area.

We stayed at In Den Ouden Vesting for only one night unfortunately! The moment we arrived, we loved it. This is a very dog-friendly B&B, which is always great for us as we travel with our dog as much as we can. Eleonora was welcoming and friendly; we are looking forward to visiting again. The B&B is very clean and has everything you need - a nice kitchen area, comfy bed, relaxing living area AND a wood burning stove, which was wonderfully warm! The breakfast was delicious, with lots of variety. The garden is very nice as well. Really hoping we can visit again soon!!

Every thing works just like it should, highest standarts and comfort, well maintained place. I recommend it to anyone who deserve to stay at the BEST he ever had.
Im a big traveler and I circled the world, I stayed in good one’s and bad one’s but here there is a well lubricated service, nothing bad to say. Sorry

Thx to Eleonora and her great family from the heart !

Firstly, Den Ouden Vesting is located in Nieuwpoort, South Holland, Netherlands, NOT Nieuwpoort, West Flanders, Belgium - although by the time you read this TripAdvisor should have corrected their error.

This B&B stands out as the best on our recent tour of Europe. We're already planning our next visit.

We made initial contact by email. Eleonora was helpful from the start, answering all my queries promptly and fully.

The B&B is located in Nieuwpoort, a small town in South Holland. The area around the B&B is residential and quiet. Surrounding properties are in good condition and the area feels safe.

On arrival Eleonora met us at the gate, greeted us warmly and showed us in. To access the B&B you walk through Eleonora's garden, which is a delight. Part of the garden is reserved for B&B customers. This is pleasant and private, complete with table and chairs. Eleonora's rabbit has the run of the garden, and provided occasional entertainment as it attempted to become amorous with one of her two cats!

Eleonora showed us to our room. At least, we expected a room. What we got was more of a suite. An entrance hall with storage and hooks for outdoor clothing, complete with waterproof ponchos and umbrellas for our use. A kitchen, fully equipped with fridge, hob, microwave, kettle, plenty of of storage, tea and coffee. (If you chose to stay without the breakfast, which is an option, you'd have no problem self-catering - and there's a Spar five minutes' walk away.) Next a large room containing a queen sized double bed (actually two large singles fastened together but looked, felt and slept like a big double), dining table and chairs, a sofa and an easy chair grouped round a wood-burning stove, a TV on its own little table, a writing area with a built-in desk and bookshelves containing lots of information about the area. And finally a spacious bathroom with twin basins and a walk-in shower. Everything was spotlessly clean, with good quality bedding and thick towels (which are replaced daily). Eleonora explained that this was part of her home until she decided to offer it for B&B a few years ago. She mentioned another room elsewhere in the house but we didn't see that.

There's no dining room, but Eleonora has an elegant solution. At an agreed time she knocks and enters, carrying tablecloth and breakfast things. She removes the existing tablecloth, lays the new one and sets out your breakfast. We enjoyed three breakfasts and each day brought a different tablecloth and crockery. The food is excellent, with a wide choice of bread and rolls, meats, cheeses and spreads, plus yoghurt, juice and cake. The only thing you don't get is tea or coffee, which Eleonora asks that you make yourself. Easy to see why, as this would be a hazard to carry, and hardly a hardship as everything to make tea and coffee is already in your kitchen.

Eleonora went out of her way to make us feel welcome, and to make sure we got the best out of our stay. This extended to volunteering to come with us to the local cycle shop and act as interpreter when we hired bikes (a bargain at €15 a day for two bikes).

You might not be able to always park right outside the B&B, but this isn't a problem as there are parking places nearby and two small car parks within a couple of minutes' walk. I'm cagey about where I park my convertible but I was happy leaving it in the car park overnight - it was well-lit, overlooked by houses and this is a quiet town, not Amsterdam!

Fast, free Internet was an added bonus.

The people we met in Nieuwpoort were, without exception, friendly and welcoming. The area offers lots of opportunity for gentle walks, and as an old fortress town there's history to explore, too. Plus there's plenty of countryside on your doorstep, if you want to venture further on foot or by bicycle.

The Cafe de Dam is two minutes' walk away and does decent food at a reasonable cost. A few minutes' walk in the other direction is De Poort, which looks like a take-away but was closed while we were there. There's a small selection of shops and a good-sized Spar, all within a few minutes' walk.

Staying at Den Ouden Vesting was a real pleasure, and we highly recommend it.
