This farm house at the top of a road among some beautiful vineyards is as welcoming and lovely as the pictures show. But Doreen made our visit special - from the moment she greeted us ( actually, even prior to that), we were at ease and knew that we needed more than the three days of our visit to enjoy the greatest wine region in the world. Her home is beautifully decorated and her breakfasts were fantastic, as well. She set up visits with local winemakers and turned us on to restaurants and places to visit we might easily have passed by. Though we threw her a bit of a curve prior to our arrival by adding an extra person to our reservation, Doreen graciously accommodated us. Looking at our pictures from that part of our trip brings back the morning sounds of the tractors working the grape rows down the valley and the breeze that came up the hill every afternoon. We stayed for three nights in early July, and given our jet lag and the early summer heat, it's hard to imagine we could have been more comfortable.

We arrived after a 6-hour drive from France to be greeted with two bottles of wine and Antipasti on the veranda. Sitting amongst the vine and the rolling hillside views felt as though we had arrived in paradise, but the true gem has to be Doreen. She is there when you need anything without being overbearing.

We had chosen this area for a wine tasting tour of Italy and Doreen said "leave it to me and I will see if I can arrange some visits for you". The next morning, Doreen informed us that she had made an appointment at a nearby vineyard for a tasting. We were greeted at the vineyard and had a 3-hour personnel tasting and tour.
The next morning we were told that another tasting had been arranged with a local grower, which was within walking distance. We sat in Claudio's cellar for another 3 hour wine tasting, where he had supplied cheese and bread and 6 of the most glorious wines he producers. He also took us to see his vines and explained the growing season perfectly.

The breakfast in the morning is something to behold, with cereal, cold meats and cooked breakfast, all taken on the veranda overlooking the stunning vine covered hills.

Every morning when leaving, Doreen would wait for us by the car and give us all a bottle of water and say " this is your water for the day", and wave us off.

We did not know where to eat at night so Doreen suggested some local eating places, all which she had tried, and her suggestions were certainly good ones. She even phoned one to make a booking for us to make sure we could get in.

On one occasion we decided to return early with a couple of bottles of local wine and when we returned Doreen had left out wine glasses for Red and White and some nibbles with a note saying, don’t bother about washing the glasses, just leave them and I will do them in the morning

The rooms are certainly 5 star quality and because of the location are exceptional quiet, with only the occasional sound of a cicada to break the silence.

If you are looking for tranquillity and solitude, or maybe a beautiful hideaway to explore the local Asti area of Italy, this is the only place you should be considering

Everything at Casa di Maio is just about perfect. Three of us rented all three rooms and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Every detail in the rooms is lovely and the beautiful spot in the garden to sit and look out at the valley is stunning. The food and drink is extraordinary. But the real gem here is Doreen herself. She makes it her business to ensure a comfortable and luxurious stay - but in an incredibly gracious and non-intrusive way. She seems to have an innate sense about when people want to chat and when they want to be left alone - an incredible skill. She arranged a wonderful wine-tasting for us as a local winery where it's hard to get a reservation and had wonderful restaurant recommendations as well - she never steered us wrong.

A little bit more about the food - on arrival we were greeted with prosecco and antipasti - both of impressive quality and quantity. It was all so delicious that we practically didn't need dinner. On the couple of occasions when we came back from the day's activities and were hanging around for a bit we were offered a glass of wine or an aperitif. And the breakfast. I'm not sure I can do it justice. On the first day we were almost full from the wonderful assortment of cereals, yogurt, fruit, meats and cheeses when Doreen said - "hot breakfast is coming in just a minute!" Stuffed French toast promptly arrived to our delight. On another day there was an artichoke frittata. Also, your choice of French press coffee or espresso. In short, make time for the breakfast - it's the best one you'll have on your vacation.

We only had one hiccup with Casa di Maio. They accidentally double booked the rooms for part of our stay and let us know a little more than a month before we were to arrive. We had reserved for six nights but they only had three nights available. This was disappointing - but handled with such grace and care - including helping us find other lodgings - that I still give Casa di Maio the highest rating. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

We stayed 4 nights in early June with friends. This really is a great place and Doreen is indeed a rock star. Rooms are spotless and well designed, breakfasts are huge and the best we had in Italy- almost too much given the other meals of the day. The location is an ideal home base for relaxing and enjoying the food and wine of Piemonte. It's an easy drive to some outstanding restaurants (Due Lanterne, Del Bardon) and both Asti and Alba areas. We used the kitchen one night, which was a nice bonus, and also used the laundry service which was a bargain. Do yourself a favor and stay here.

Casa di Maio was the perfect location and B+B for our four days in Piedmont. We picked the area based on our favorite wines (Barolo, Barbera, Barbaresco) and then found Casa from tripadvisor. We are not typically fans of B+B's but this is very different than most we were used to. Despite being a converted farmhouse, they have really managed to keep old details intact with a modern, comfortable feel in the rooms. The room itself was very comfortable, the bathroom very nice, and our balcony onto the rolling vineyards was superb. In addition, the owners are so generous and friendly the stay its a huge bonus. They welcomed us with prosecco, wine, food, and great conversation and music. Doreen will help direct you to best restaurants, set up private wine tastings with local winemakers (not tour guides), and cook some amazing breakfasts each day.

We hope to come visit again someday!

We stayed at casa di Maio for the second time. It was still as great as we remembered it and it felt so good to be back!! With Doreen taking care of everything: the warm welcome with wine and a platter of cheese and cold cuts, extensive breakfast, beautifully designed and spotless rooms. Yes, this is our Piemont home base! We will be back!

As I said to Doreen, after a 6 hours drive from Rome we were greeted by a delicious bottle of prosecco and antipasti, the best welcome to a B&B I've ever had! Everything was incredible, immaculately clean room, delicious home cooked breakfast with something for everyone and Doreen was excellent in recommending restaurants and wine tastings.

We cant wait to go back!
