“good weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2013

stayed here with my husband as a weekend away, weve seen this pub before and we were ataying there as a dummy run for july when we stay over for the racing,The pub had a really friendly atmosphere and the staff very lovely and very welcoming, our room which was a twin upstairs had a shower (with shampoo and shower jel) the water was red hot and the beds were comfortable, the stay was pleasant with a good nights sleep and a very good breakfast i would recommend this as it just mins from the station and about 10mins walk to the racecourse,We had evening meal there aswell and found the restaurant very good and plentiful well worth the money for the stay,

Room Tip: rooms upstairs will be quieter as there is a beer garden outside and will be noisy in the summer at...

I regularly go to the Vale of York for their carvery on Sunday. The food is always good and is excellent value for money. The service is also good and the staff are very friendly and helpful. If you are in the bar before your meal try to sit away from the door as it can be a bit cold there!

I was a bit worried on reading the reviews but the accomodation was fine and the breakfast was very good. The room we were in was clean and comfortable it had 5 single beds in it so I can see where people may regard this as a hostel. The bathroom was large and clean. The door to the bathroom had a label which read "No Food Or Fishing Bait allowed" Which I thought was a bit strange. It was quite near the racecourse so if there was a few of you here for the races it would be fine.

Quite simply an appalling excuse of a hotel. The strange stench that greeted us upon entering the bedroom/cupboard was the equivalent of several piles of mouldy laundry.
The decor was like watching Life on Mars and the grotesque shades stayed in your head even when you shut your eyes. The 'en suite' part is very tenuous, mouldy seals, leaking shower - together with the previous unfortunate occupiers bathroom products and warning signs of not eating or bringing fishing bait into the room.
No pictures, furniture, style, class or elegance. The Vale of York exudes everything a B & B should not be.
Reccomendations - hire a cleaner, painter, style expert, or alternatively a demolition company to save the expense and knock the accomodation down.
The plus point, the owner is very friendly and amiable which itself takes some guts.

The one good point of our stay was the over enthusiastic manager but even he was too ashamed to show us to the room. The decor was out of this world (hell in the 80's?!), unclean bedding, the previous occupants shower gel in the shower, broken coat hangers on the phone and a suspicious smelling pillow. £55 not well spent!

Ged Brian and Deano went to Thirsk for a days racing. We travelled up from Essex and had a great weekend. The racing was superb but this was also matched by the hospitality and service by Julian and his team which was second to none. Even though I mistook the gravy for soup but was soon put in my place!!! Thanks to all for a great weekend. We will return. Many thanks.

This property is in an ideal location for a value for money B&B; within walking distance of Thirsk Rail Station and the bus stops for Ripon/Northallerton. This made it perfect for an overnight stay before visiting Lightwater Valley. Excellent pub food served in the evening, although the menu available to download from the official website is currently outdated (with inaccurate pricing and a few options which are no longer available). Despite paying upon ordering, we were asked if we would like to pay for the meal again after we'd eaten! Rather unprofessional, and I can imagine that this could lead to mistakes being made.

Our room was situated in a building adjacent to the main pub. This was fine as we were shown to our room, but unfortunately someone had turned off the main corridor light in the interim, making it a challenge to return to the pub for food. As far as I could tell the only light switch was at the entry door. I used my phone LED to find my way back and turn the light back on. However, this could lead to an injury if someone were to fall down the stairs in the dark. It may be worth adding a motion sensor for the internal corridor light?

The room standard was better than I was expecting, considering there aren't many images on the website. I was surprised to see the complimentary tea/coffee making facilities, but the travel kettle could do with replacing as the internal element is covered in lime-scale. The television is quite small and mounted in an awkward position, although I’m not sure if this could be helped considering the room configuration.
