“Don't bother going”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

Been four times (not by choice) and it has got worse and worse on each occasion.

The first time, two of us went for lunch to try the place out. Nicely done out and the food was ok to mediocre but a little overpriced for what it actually was. It was a nearly empty restaurant so we thought we'd give it a try in the evening at some point in the future to experience the place at its best ambience.

On the second occasion, a group of us went there for my birthday in the evening. A number of dishes were not available on the menu and given that this was early on a Saturday evening, we were rather disappointed that they had not got in sufficient supplies in advance. Again, a tad expensive for the quality of the meal received.

On the third occasion, we were invited for a friend's birthday meal. We probably wouldn't have chosen to have gone again had it been just ourselves, after the experience of the second visit. We received the same mediocre quality of food at the same prices. We expected this but we were not prepared for the surly, arrogant waitress, who clearly had no concept of customer service or why she was actually doing the job. It was pointless trying to protest as it was someone else's birthday and naturally, we didn't want it to spoil their evening.

On the fourth occasion, we went for another friend's birthday meal. The menu was again limited due to lack of supplies. The service was very slow, considering the restaurant was only half full - not sure how they would cope with a full house. Same mediocre quality food, small portions and higher than average prices. We had desserts, solely because we were still hungry, not because we actually wanted desserts. One friend ordered the cheese platter. The price and description suggested that its contents would have been adequate for two people. It was barely enough for one person - four crackers, four pre-sliced slivers of cheese and a thimble of chutney. We were all insulted at the owner's audacity and greed.

We will not go back and would not recommend.

We wouldn't recommend this place.

“Really relaxed sunny Sunday dining”
Reviewed 9 March 2014 via mobile

Our third visit to the Goldcroft in a month! This place is a real gem. We ended up dining al fresco as the sunshine was such a tonic! Good-quality food, cooked to a high standard. Service is always very good too. Oh, and the toilets are fresh and clean, unlike the 'filled entrance rat.' Well done, chaps!

“Disappointed Foursome”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

Four of us decided to treat ourselves to a meal at Goldcroft one dark dreary January night, only to be disappointed by average but expensive food. The bored looking waitress did not know the soup of the day , she did not know if the venison was on or not . I asked to have my coat hung up ,it was put on table by kitchen! The landlady/owner did not acknowledge us all night. A group of noisy women sat on next table ,one of who,s chair kept knocking back of mine , strange as rest of restaurant was empty. We spent a£150 and no one said goodnight, I wish we had spent our money elsewhere!! M newport

“Sunday lunch”
Reviewed 3 November 2013

Walked in no reservation were told fully booked but we could have a meal as there was an hour before the booking of vacant table, we decided to stay and are really happy they we did meal was excellent well presented and tasty with the dessert of sticky toffee pudding being so light it could haven floated to the table.
During the meal we were told no rush as the booking had just cancelled (weather was really bad outside)
The lights were a bit dim for me, but we will be back when we are in the area.
