“Roman Baths Interactive for Children”

The Roman Baths was quite the experience - and was very interactive for children and adults. Provided some unusual facts that are not well known for this area. Free. Highly recommend.

“A journey back in time.”

One of the finest examples of its kind & only 7 minutes from the M4
Well worth combining a visit here with one to the Roman Museum.

“Favorite Welsh Attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 April 2014

Traveling Europe with me can be pretty repetitive for my companions--I studied medieval European history in school, and I like to float from castle to cathedral to ancient Roman site, often neglecting the bigger cultural attractions in a given area. That said, we weren't planning on visiting Caerleon; a blurb in one of the tourist brochures about the "origins of King Arthur" and it was on the way, so we stopped. So glad we did--the sites at Caerleon are a wonderful treasure, the definition of "living history".

We stopped first at the bathhouse, and if it were all that there were in the town, it'd be worth a stop to the Roman history buff in your party. The remains are unimpressive--that is, they consist of a foundation akin to many other settlements throughout the Roman world--but they are presented in an innovative way that will grab the attention of anyone in your party. The audio tour is very well done, and the artifacts and replicas on display will get your imagination pumping.

The amphitheater down the road is impressive and worth a photo (it's where the "King Arthur" blurb came from), and the barracks give you a sense of the order Romans could expect throughout their world.

The museum, though, is a total treat, especially if you have kids in your party. Lots of interactive exhibits and a narrative that follows the probably (but fictionalized) events of some ancient residents. The day we went, there was a legionnaire walking about as well.

Make Caerleon's fortress and baths a stop if you are near. This was my favorite part of a multi-day trip to Wales.

“Great day out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

Free, great sites, lovely town. My husband and I enjoyed it but also saw how it was well geared for families with children. The amphitheater is covered with grass on the top and outside so it is comfortable for a picnic but excavated inside so you can get a clear idea of what it would have been like in the past. It needs somewhere to buy tea and a sandwich but that's my only criticism.
