“Great lunch - if a little on the pricey side”
Reviewed 6 January 2014

Good food all round. Excellent fish and chips. Seafood pancake was also good. Little on the expensive side for a pub lunch - especially if additional side orders of vegetables are added. I like the fact that there's an area set aside for those who pop in for a drink only which retains the pub atmosphere.

This is an absolute gem of a place. We booked at table (with dog) and had a great meal. The only caution I would give is that the portions are pretty big so the starters and deserts are wasted. I had shrimp linguine in chilli sauce, it was fantastic. I returned to have the seafood pancake, again just delicious.

Topped off by a couple of pints of Tribute, this is a place I would gladly return, and actually would consider never leaving.

Brilliant comfortable accommodation, clean and up to date. Food and service excellent. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, highly recommend. The couple who own it and their staff are great fun and work really hard to maintain standards and the well presented food. Good value for dinner bed and breakfast. We were passing through on a walking holiday from Salcombe to Dartmouth. We needed our luggage taken to Dartmouth and the owners had a member of staff drive it round for us! AMAZING.

Room Tip: Our group had 3 rooms, all of equally high standard.

I ordered the special of the day, Sea Bass at £19 plus £ 3 for a side of chips. It was a very very small portion and cold. When I complained the waitress was shirty. My husbands food was uninspiring so wish we had stuck to the cheaper option of Fish and Chips. We had a bottle of wine between us and a pint of beer, but the still had the cheek to charge us £1 for a jug of tap water. They obviousely did not want us to stay for deserts as the waitress just said that she would bring the bill as she cleared our main course plates. Very disappointing.

Room Tip: We just had an evening meal in the restaurant

At first sight, we found the Cricket Inn disappointing. From the outside it looks like a very ordinary seaside pub - but step inside and the warmth of the welcome is outstanding and you soon get used to and welcome the New England-style plain décor both in the public areas and in the rooms. An initial cock-up with our booking (not the Cricket's fault) was dealt with sympathetically, much aided by a small reduction in the room fee and a complementary round of drinks and bottle of wine. Our first room was quite large but looked out only on a grass covered wall; the second was smaller but had a great sea view. Both rooms had comfortable beds and decent sized bathrooms with walk-in showers. We dined there on three nights and couldn't get enough of the fresh fish, particularly the mussels and the crevettes. The menu, of course, focuses on seafood but I also had a steak which was done to perfection. The wine is extremely reasonable. Breakfasts, too, were brilliant with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and the full English or any variety of it. We found the landlord and landlady (+ Brewster the dog) and all the staff to be friendly without being pushy and very helpful. Definitely recommend a stay.

Room Tip: Must have a seaview

Had two meals at The Cricket Inn over the weekend.
Sardines, fish pancakes, chilli prawns and best of all fresh shell on crab.
All were top class, as was service. Great place, would recommend to anyone who likes seafood.
Good selection of beers too.
