This was my second time to visit. This was a perfect activity after doing the Tongariro Crossing the day before. It feels very local and friendly, unpretentious. It is also worth a short walk through the adjacent park to look at the boiling mud and hot pools.

We had a late night excursion to the hot pools at 8.30pm and just made it in time as they were to close at 9pm. The three of us opted for a private pool. It is basic and it is just concrete and hot water but what more do you want. Nice hot relaxing mineral water, quiet surroundings( if was 8.30pm) We all just sunk in and relaxed. The price was fine. I think if they upmarketed this attraction you would find prices take a hike and you would be paying $25 like at the Polynesian Spa in Rotorua. there is something to be said for average and nice.

This was a great afternoon, first a small 20 minute walk round the thermal pools, stroller suitable and a look for the trout in the stream on arrival, before a lovely soak in the hot pools, the kids pool had a sun shade over it and was a good temp for the little ones. There is only a cold shower for afterwards, no hot showers to rinse off.
